Affirmative Action in Aviation

I had a good post typed up, but I am afriad I will be attacked for it, so I am choosing not to post it in order to not start a JC race riot. So I'll just say this. I am sick of being asked what race I am. You should not be offered any special treatment because of where your ancestors came from, or what race you check on the paperwork. If that is the case, I think my son will now become either African-American or Hispanic/Latino.


What happened was in the past. It's time to get over it and move on with the world.

Like I said, I'm "other".

Again I'll say that although I'm qualified for a major 121 carrier gig right now, no ones beating down the door to get me into their companies because I'm a minority. I'll comment on this more tomorrow when I'm sober.

Well it's not neccessarily like that. I can assure everyone that I've earned every thing I've gotten out of this industry so far. There has been no preferential treatment at all. I've earned it all! Blood, sweat, and tears!

I was discriminated against recently, and it actually really bothered me. I applied for a bunch of jobs, and of course check the 'I have the right to work in the US' box. Most of the employers who I talked with in follow up or interview asked about my immigration status, probably more so than strictly follows the rules, but it's pretty understandable and I'm comfortable volunteering. I had one big flight school who responded by email: 'I have only one question, are you a US Citizen?', and I heard nothing else after my 'Permanent Resident' response. This school has no government contracts or any of the other permitted reasons for only hiring citizens. I did consider an EEOC complaint, but I was too busy with interviews to pay much attention to what was only really a backup anyway.

Affirmative Action? I say let's have some equality!

If you're as conscientious as I believe you are, I think take a few opportunities to remind the neanderthals around our immediate proximity (those who provide a reason for even having affirmative action to begin with), they need to stop the madness that is discrimination, prejudice, sexism, and racism. I, unfortunately, spend a lot of time telling knuckleheaded guys women can perform certain jobs as equally as men; never make assumptions based on skin color, for they'll be sadly mistaken by the probable outcome. I spend a lot of time telling "the brothers" for every one white guy who has it in their mind to go back to HIS good old days of the clan, there's 10 white guys who believe that attitude is aberrant. (You can debate my percentage amongst yourselves; it's simply a point to be made. )

It's all good; it aint great, but it's moving in that direction.

Thanks for all the responses I just now caught up to this thread again. I appreciate the inside information for the person in HR. The story is true and by "hiring board" I mean this person sat in on that board that gives the initial HR interview and since this person is a captain, the technical as well. I just posted it to guage the forum on what other people put on they're resumes and I'll keep my own consul on my personal feelings about AA itself.

And we have a long way to go. Until we reach that high ground, I will continue to check the box as a White, African, Native American. Got a little of all of em in the woodpile so why not take advantage!

Didn't go to the game, but the tailgating had EPIC WIN written all over it. Kappa Luau would have had a hard time competing. I love me some Charlie Vergos' as well but they don't tend to ship as good as the Interstate. 6 of one half dozen of the other, bring my cracker ass some ribs!!!!!!!

I'm believing strongly as well that your naval officer's father's experiences after WWII were the exception (as few and far between as they were) and not the norm. Sure, there were plenty minorities after WWII who did well, but to say minorities faired equally as whites during that time period would be far from true. Cmon now, we all know Thurgood Marshall, Vivien Thomas, Benjamin O. Davis and many other prominent minorities succeed DESPITE the racism. No one is saying it can't happen; what's being said was everyone hasn't received a fair shake over the years. Also, those "successes mentioned?" Wondering how much MORE/further they could have gone if racism wasn't a factor?

Like many of us here, we have been successful because of our abilities first and foremost, someone has to recognize those abilities, but most importantly, someone has to appreciate those abilities COMING FROM ME! That shrinking group of idiots who thought first of color may have made it difficult but not impossible. Sure, maybe a couple of setbacks/defeats/losses for a few, but that's not the norm either thanks to perseverance.

Can't say I disagree. In my post I was saying I see the need for it in some form, whereas 20 yrs ago, I thought it was reverse discrimination. I did point out an odd conversation or viewpoint of a collegue who thought it might harm minorities. My point is, that all should prepare more than the competition for what they want, and not be envious of other peoples successes. There are negative and positive aspects of Affirmative Action, and if properly implemented it is a necessary and arguably good thing. I do think at some time issues will be somewhat resolved. I think the big thing is to do away with "old boy" networks as the true enemy of justice and fairness. I was not trying to be a history revisionist. Just wanted my position understood. One more thing to add, I have said here before is that you can self destruct seeing the bogeyman of racism.

I was based in MEM for a short time and went to college an hour and a half south of there. It can be a great city. I loved Beale St!

Florida Classic is about the bands, but we've had this conversation before. I went to Ole Miss, I too have experienced Beale St. I just think Smooth can't handle the level of intensity that is BB's.
