Most of our senior people did used to compete up to the Advanced level. Unfortunately, that was back in the days of "Run what ya Brung". Otherwise known as the Good ol Days. No one cared what you flew, just that you were up flying and enjoying the fellowship of other pilots.
The amount of contests in Arizona at least dropped to about 4 or 5 a year and the closest to Phoenix is now Coolidge. Add to that that the costs went up huge and it became more about the flight suits, the helmets, gloves and look at me... well the local interests just wained a bit. So long story short, it kinda died off.
Though we do all hope the cometition comes back.. Cause we are all chomping at the bit. Though with the Great Lakes, we would be limited to Intermediate (just not enough oomff). Ah well... oh to dream. For now, I will just teach (very happily) day after day, teaching in an open cockpit biplane and enjoying.... lol... yeah, I am rubbing it in.
Seriously though. For anyone interested in learning, come out to see us. You may want to wait until it is not 115 degrees out here though. Just saying...
