Why didn't he pull the chute?

Re: Areo Commander Set Down on the Highway.

I don't think I've ever heard of someone setting a twin down on a highway before. I'm sure it happens from time to time but this sure isn't your regular "Cessna makes an emergency landing on I-95" that seems to pop up every few weeks.

Maybe bad fuel? This should be an interesting report! Glad everyone is fine!

Re: Areo Commander Set Down on the Highway.

That was Delaware State Police's up until last month. My dad's got 1000+ hours in it. The airplane had perfect MX and fresh engines. I'm willing to bet it was fueled with Jet A if it lost both engines.

Try Southern Airways 242, 4 April 1977

Ahhh yes, thank you MikeD as usual:) I completely forgot about that one. Funny thing is I remember bringing it up in the infamous "hurricane" thread a few months back...

My memory is failing me!

Or he could have hit the fuel shutoff valves instead of the boost pumps.

Either way... very bad.

Re: Areo Commander Set Down on the Highway.

As long as nobody was injured:

Most likely cause was when he switched to departure, he said "with you, climbing 1.5 for 5" ...as soon as those words were muttered, dual failure.

:bandit:

Kudos to him for not hurting himself or anybody else...minus the tree.

"I-10 and Chaffee Road traffic, Rockwell XXX is left downwind for the westbound shoulder. Any traffic please advise."

That was the final straw after the departure call you said he made....

It's been a long time since I've been in that airplane, but it had the long range tanks so I believe instead of the shutoff valve being on a swith it was actually more like a fuel selector. Look at the red knob on the overhead in this photo.

You know what happens with anything that's in "perfect" condition, don't you.....

Re: Areo Commander Set Down on the Highway.

Interesting...

Do you happen to remember if it had a Hoover ring?

I don't think it did. None of the 560's I've ever flown have had it. This was an E model. The outboard tanks only hold 10 gallons a side, it wasn't uncommon for people to forget to switch back to the mains in that airplane.

Maybe the cops thought it was John and Martha King and shot it down to see if they had stolen the plane or not...

Re: Areo Commander Set Down on the Highway.

Do you see what happens when you call yourself "Sugah Pawpa's"!
