Aerial Mapping

Air America is probably the best for pay, but also probably the biggest pain in the butt setting up your own hotel, rental car, hangar and maintenance. If you are willing to work in the summer where the days are longer(10-12 hour windows of insanity), the weather is good, and the work is available, you can get 10k a month alone in the months of June-September. My W2 was 80k for one year there. I think two guys broke 100k in the 2011-2012 season. 1100 hours in ~9 months of flying too. They also have 5 aztecs now I think, so you could probably get into one and get some multi in one season I bet.

I currently work for one of the largest aerial mapping companies flying a C172. There are four main "vendors" that work for the larger company, "Pictometry". There are also a few others that are independent but seem to not work as much. The salary does vary between each of the vendors but not by too much. Some companies get more in per diem and how they chose to spend/save is up to them while others just straight up pay for your expenses and then provide less of a salary but with the opportunity to receive bonuses.

As for flying an Aztec/Navajo, most companies only give those positions to pilots who have already been employed for at least one full season especially if you only have 500TT. Most companies start all pilots in a C172 or something similar and then you go from there.

Overall I would recommend the job regardless of salary to anyone who is looking to build time and is not bound by anything at home because you will be on the road for almost a full year. It's a great experience criss crossing the country in all types of flying conditions. If you have any more questions feel free to PM me.

Freight is an absolute cake walk compared to this. By far the best experience in aviation I've ever had so far and will take with me forever.

That's because you fly an airplane adequate for the mission now. Er well more suited I guess.

Yeah, I don't care about wind or mountains these days. :) I remember many days in Spokane that were "well this isn't working, time to dive into the valley!". haha
