Aerial Application

Does anybody know anything about aerial applicators. I am curious how those guys/girls start out. I have seen a few adds for specialized schools, but how do you get an employer to trust you with an expensive plane at five feet AGL?

Has anybody here flown ag?

Used to be a crop duster local to me who posted on here occasionally (agcatman) but haven't seen anything from him in the past year or so.

Simply put, insurance is the biggest hurdle for people wanting to get into the field. I think if you get an A&P and a botanist/horticulture degree, etc. it might increase your chances of getting hired (extreme but you get the idea..).

With or without the above, its probably all about who you know and being in the right place/right time.

Up here in North Dakota, most all of the crop dusters are just farmers doing it themselves, so if you know one that would be a good place to start.

Never flown but do know an operator
No insurance
Timed out engines (piston)
Poor MX
Around way to much chemicals

I wouldn't mess around with it. Look at doing the SEAT's instead which are your cropduster pilots anyway

I'm betting the number of cropdusters with botanist/horticulture degrees can be counted on one hand (or less). If you are serious about this contact some established schools. They don't just train you and kick you out the door. They often have their own operations for you to move into.

And good operators keep good equipment.

Get to know some ag applicators in your area. They will point you in the right direction. I thought about doing that myself a couple of times, but the sprayers I know discouraged me from it. It doesn't help that the wife won't have any part of it. ;)

Aaron, man call me up sometime and well go down and get our selves some jobs doing some crop dusting. Yea comon.

Well I remember agcatman saying that it is a bad line of work if you want to fly for an airline someday because you can pretty much count on banging up an airplane or two.

Supposedly airlines frown on that.
