ADX test

I have read a few threads where some have said they took the adx before class? I hope I read that right. I am going to IFOD in aug. My understanding was that we took the written test after 3 weeks and then spent the last two on the practical. Is it possible to take the adx even before you go to class? If so is this the best option? I have about 8 weeks before school. Is this enought time to study for the test or should I study and wait till they have us take it after the third week? Any replies would be great , esp anyone who went to IFOD. Ty.

I'm not sure how you would go about taking it before hand because my understanding is that you have to be signed off, but that may just be a Jeppesen thing. If I were to do this over, I'd have found a way to take it first just to have one less stressor to deal with. Not sure about IFOD but Jeppesen has been packed full, 16 + hour days and high stress. Their program is very thorough and we only worked on the practical for the last week. Having two weeks would have been helpful! Either way, whatever you decide to do, arrive @ IFOD READY to take the ADX as if you would be taking it day one. It will save you a LOT of stress and headaches... Hope that helps a little. Best of luck! My O&P is Tuesday :)

Ty for the post. I must have read the threads wrong. I plan to be as ready as I can before school. Good luck on the O and P . Im sure you will ace. I hope you continue to post and let us know how things go for you:)

It depends on which school you attend and which course you take. I attended Sheffield's 2-week course and I had to take the ADX test before the first day of class. Good Luck!

You're welcome, no problem! I do plan to continue to post because people have been so helpful to me on here and I'd like to pay it forward. I'm hoping my o&p goes well but those in my class that went yesterday had nightmare stories! However, they all passed. Thanks for the good wishes... Lmk if I can help down the line. :)

If my memory serves me correctly anyone can go take the ADX exam at anytime. It's when you get below a passing score that you either need a sign off from an instructor stating that you know the incorrect material(don't need to wait 30 days) -OR- wait 30 days to retake the exam. I would take the exam before school that way you can focus on the material they give in school for the oral/practical.

Dont take it before. The cost of the test is included in your admission. You'd be paying for it twice. Just study, study, and study some more before you go to class. That way you are not overloaded for those first 3 weeks. Good luck!

Some schools will credit you for taking it before so it's something to look into, to see if your school of choice will do that. If you don't take it before, just show up to school ready to take it. It will alleviate a LOT of stress.

Iv'e read people talking about how the math equations on the ADX take a while? I thought it was all memorization questions.

I also did the Sheffield DL program + 3 weeks and I did mine before I started the in class stuff. I'm real glad too. People were stressing out like crazy trying to study for the ADX and regular tests/practical at the same time.

Also, there was a fair amount of math questions. You can try to learn them and take the time to calculate them or you can just memorize the answers. Just remember, the ADX has little to do with real dispatching so IMO you aren't really selling yourself short by memorizing the answers.

Thanks Titansox! I'm just getting into the pallet load weight and floor weight questions. I'm not understanding any of the other stuff with the charts..It asks for something and then doesn't tell you how to figure it out..The questions just says refer the charts x,x,x...etc

You are going to come to HATE those charts! Just thinking about them drives me mad...hahaha... It's best to just memorize them because you'll never see them again after the ADX.

One of my instructors said he had a student who came up with a system for memorizing those questions. Rather than trying to memorize all the numbers, he used a "high, middle, lowest" system that he named the (H)onda, (M)itzubishi, (L)exus method. Lol... Whatever works! So if the answer was the lowest of the three choices, he memorized Lexus. Sounds silly but I guess he got 100% on his ADX! I didn't try it because I actually wanted to learn how to do all that stuff but honestly, after the stress and frustration, I wish I'd just memorized all those answers. Hahaha...

Good luck! :-)

I studied the crap out of the regulations (relavent stuff) so I knew every question like the back of my hand. When I took the ADX, I skipped ever non reg question and got the ones I knew out of the way. So when I finished up those, I knew I only missed maybe one or two of the regs and if I got 3 out of the last 25, I'd pass. So I relaxed and finished the last 25 and passed easily. Sheffield has a list of 500 questions that are commonly on the test and pretty much every question on the ADX was on that list.

Thank you again womanpilot and titansox!!!!:) Pretty much after I sign up which should be Thursday, I will get that password and print out the 600 questions for Sheffield. Then use the ATP book to study the charts. I'd say through the first 6 chapters, I feel like most of the information and questions Iv'e learned are less likely to show up on the ADX, I could be wrong though. I hope once I get the list of the most common questions from Sheffield that it calms my nerves a bit. I wanna find out the fastest way to memorize the questions. I try to study at work but can never get to deep into it before I'm called away to go help a customer. I commit a lot of time to working out after work, I lost 116 lbs in the last year :) Then when I get home and try to sit down and study, I'm always tired..lol. It's the never ending cycle!! To make it worse I'm going on vacation for 7 days starting Friday..I start school Aug 20th so I should be fine if I just keep at it!

You are welcome! I would definitely not count on questions from those chapters NOT being on the ADX. My particular test had a bit of everything! There's really no shortcut other than a narrowed down list that Sheffield hands out. If that really is accurate, what a wonderful thing to have! I actually even had a few questions on my O&P from the Gleim and luckily I remembered the answers! I honestly feel that the software (Gleim) is what sped up the memorization process for me. It was just a lot quicker than the book and taking tests over and over on the computer made things sink in really good. It's the repetition...

Honestly, no matter how far you get, I guarantee you are going to wish you'd done more. But you'll get through it...I just did!

Enjoy your vacation :)
