Hey all... I am a 20 year old CFI 1400/80 Multi... I am taking classes online and really only need to finish the general ed part of my degree....

Tough part - I am a Check Airman at a 141 school out of PVD, flying about 100 hours a month... however my buddy wants me to go to his school to finish up the gen ed stuff.... and get an apartment.
(and party's etc:rawk: )...

I am looking to teach part time at a small airfield near there while I finish this up, or I could get a airline job..and try to finish it up online...or take this one shot chance to do this... I don't know how it will effect my career (from flying 100 a month to 20 a month...)

This is one of the hardest decisions ever.... help me out

Is his school the same school as where your getting your online degree? if not, the school could require you to take a lot more credit so they get their money out of you...

I'm in the EXACT same position as you. I'm a 20 year old, however soon to be MEI and taking online classes towards my degree. My friend also wants me to move back to NY (crappy WX/less students) and get an apartment with him. I'm not big on partying and drinking too much, and I really want to get my degree and get started with my career...There are so many decisions I have yet to make...My current situations is:
260TT/190Multi COMM/AMEL

Instructing in FL = All multi time/More students/Good Weather/No women
Instructing in NY = NO Multi/Less Students/Bad Weather/Plethora of women/more fun with friends

I'm torn because, I've got plenty of multi time, but I really do want more.

I understand that I need to have my fun while young, gut I've got a serious case of SJS. The time is quickly approaching where I will have to make a decision.
 
Yup sounds like a similar situation as well. I finish up soon, right now I've got 220TT, 115mutli Comm. ME. Finishing up CFI school soon. I want to instruct in the multi, but I'd be stuck in FL for awhile, who knows for how long. My fiance lives in NJ and we just bought a house. Do I work in FL to get the multi or do I come back home and fly 172's for a local flight school? I wanna fly close to home with the house, fiance, dog etc. But I really want more multi time. I'm stuck...

As for you, dude why not a job with the airlines? I'm sure you can finish up a degree on the side once you get through initial training. With 1400TT you should be working for the airlines already. Wish I had 1400TT....hell I wish I had 1000TT.

Don't bet on this.....you'll be sitting in an airport on reserve after IOE, and with a regional you'll be moving domicile to domicile based on when they decide to close lines down.....hope your degree is not an avaiation related degree, it helps to be able to do something else (other than CFI) when you get furloughed....

With 1400TT you should be working for the airlines already

Wow- That's a blanket statement....kinda like saying 'you've been an intern for a year....you can do open heart surgery....' it's sad to see so many CFI's that all they care about it hitting that 1000TT mark and getting into that RJ.....what' worse it it's bad for their students because the CFI is basically riding along just worried about getting time.....

You're 20 years old in a position a LOT of people would want (being a 141 Check Airman) and flying 100 hours a month....I'd say stick there and finish up how you are doing it. Airlines will still be hiring in 6 months, a year... don't buy into the theory these big schools/academies have of "we'll get you to 1000TT and you to can get a job that pays $19,000 a year...."
 
I say go party and finish your degree. After you hit 1500 TT it doesnt seem like youre helping further your career anymore by instructing. Unless of course you like the job so much that you cant leave.

FlyinTim. You're times look pretty good and you can still instruct while in school. I'd go have fun and get the degree done the regular way, but that's just me. The regionals will still be there when you're done. Try to get some multi-time while your at it.
 
DE's got a good point! you'll be in an airline career for a long time to come.. now's the time to whoop it up and enjoy a bit before you have to become all mature and growns up! :)

the only trouble you might have is that if it is in fact a different school - they might want you to take 60 extra credits of classes you've already taken in order to give you the degree from their school...that would be the only problem i'd have wit it...but you could always live with him and finish your online degree - online - since it is an *online* degree and can be done from anywhere! :)

--quick math lesson, you are 20. Say you get an airline job, or any job for that matter, you're looking at 40-45 years of work. Think about the experiences you've had up until this point. They have most likely been diverse, switching schools, traveling, having lots of freedom. When you get your job, just remember you're going to be doing just about the same thing EVERY DAY for a time span that is double what your life has been thus far...

It can wait...

And just in case you're wondering, I'm 24 so I have a little idea about your situation.

Seriously, Goldmember is right, go have fun!

I talk to some of my users about how JDFlight was sleeping wielding a knife on a park bench in Europe, or Naunga running off to Paris to study the culinary arts, many of my friends taking months off to travel the world, etc. That's awesome! But you can only do those things for a finite window of time when you're young. Now I need a Swissotel, a featherbed and an in-room espresso machine in my mid-30's.

Don't rush too fast into the world of mortgages, car payments, and occupational responsibility.

I used to live to fly, but I largely fly to live and have fun with my wife. It's an enjoyable job, but it's going to leave you empty at the end of the day if that's all you have going for you.

It's like seeing a very attractive woman at the mall (hypothetically, Kristie, relax! ;) ). You think "Man, she's got this and she's got that, great hair, beautiful eyes, I'll do whatever I've got to do to get her!"

Then you date, everything is hunky dory, but after a while, the ex-boyfriend keeps calling, she's a little flatulent at times and she keeps saying "if you don't give me money, I'll leave, and I know how much you like me!". She becomes controlling, telling you when to go to work and when to go home, but you still like her and when things are good, things are good. But when they're bad, you want to leave her.

Your friends say, "DAAAAAANG man! Your woman is hot! Your life is perfect! I ordered a mail order bride that looks a lot like her (PFT) and maybe I can hang out with her long enough to marry a girl like yours, man you have it made! What are you complaining about?! A size "2" (she's got anorexia), beautiful hair (lee press-on extensions) and big beautiful boobies (leaky silicone implants), you're a jerk for complaining!"

THAT's a career in aviation for some people.

I wouldn't change anything for the world, but I'd suggest taking some timem to explore your world while you have your youth and then pursue a career in aviation. It's got ups and downs, and hopefully your 'ups' will out-trump your 'downs'.

I figure I can fly jets all my life, but I can only hit college once...

Guys who are in the same spot feel free to PM me... like to talk to you on AIM or something like that..

And 1000 TT is not much time, It only took me a year to get it..

thank you for all your help, I think I am going to do it.. hopefully I can find some part time work up there in a 172..maybe rent a twin on the side...
Ill be going there with around 1600/110 multi... but I dont think it will look bad on an interview if I took the time off to go to school... Thank you all again..

As someone who has recently graduated and had to get a "real job," I must agree with Kristie here. You'll miss the college life when it's gone.

You've received some excellent advice so I don't have much to say.

I would say, it's time to give Zeke the finger, and go enjoy school. College were some of the best years of my life and I wouldn't trade them for anything. If you can instruct part time while in school, you have no worries. Once you have your degree out of the way, you'll have many more options.

Don't rush the flying thing....you're only 20 years old and almost to ATP mins for crying out loud.

I think I can pick up a part time job up there...with any luck... Ill wait it out here till then... I am flying the twin and am getting like 30 hours a month in it:rawk: ...and they are all easy MEI students...

Whenever I talk to my old college friends, invariably we always say "Oh man, if we could go back just for a month..."
 
yea finish the degree - depending on your major it may prove to be good suppelemental income during the first few years FO pay
