Advice on being tactful

Ohhhhhh.... 8's AROUND pylons.... See I got confused just reading it.... COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME. Fire his ass and get a CFI who doesn't confuse me by making you do pointless things, waste your money, and actually wants to teach. :D

Don't know why, wasn't there, maybe they were trying to demonstrate something unrelated.

Just ask politely what you should have done better last time, and what they were trying to help you understand. Sure it is not a big deal.

If the CFI is going to have the student demonstrate "something unrelated (to the PTS)" then there needs to be a thorough briefing on the ground before the flight so the student actually understands what to do and what is expected of them. Clearly this did not happen.
I've spent the majority of my career as a CFI teaching things that are not in the PTS. If I had this kind of miscommunication with students I'd be fired or possibly dead. It's not acceptable in any training environment. At the very least its just a waste of the student's time & money.

"Can you demonstrate one for me so I can see what a good one looks like?"

Then, as he is doing it tell him to "Turn the heat off." When he says, "What?" Say, "I need you to turn the #*&@'ing heat off, go cold! Turn the heat OFF! O-F-F! It's too &@$% hot in here!!!"

:-)

There should be a good pre-flight briefing covering what's on the agenda for the flight, AND a post-flight de-briefing. If a CFI candidate isn't getting that, the unspoken message is to ignore the FOI and the PTS entirely- something that will not serve the candidate well on the checkride, or serve his students well after he becomes a CFI

One trick I learned was to brief the maneuver before doing it... I have confused soft and short T/O so many times. Briefing it to your CFI and then to the examiner during the ride will help trap miscommunication . These briefings should cover the basics. For example: 8's on pylons don't try and explain pivotal altitude, just state what it is and what the outcome of the maneuver will be.
