ADS-B Question

ZAN has been using ADS-B for close to 4 years now for radar identification. Though their software was the test bed for ADS-B, but it took years of testing and data/risk analysis to get to that point.

ZNY is using ADS-B in the off shore areas for separation and services when the radar sites are offline..... Some of these areas are single site radar so in the past these airways/sectors would be closed if the radar went offline for any reason. Now they remain open but only for ADS-B equipped flights.

Wait, WHAH?

What happened to non-radar procedures?

I'm pretty sure ZWY/ZNO areas E and F (all 14 sectors) still have non-radar procedures, and don't just close because the single site area may not have a radar feed??..

Those are the oceanic sectors which utilize Oceanic Non Radar rules and separation standards..... There are two actual off shore radar sectors which are served by single site radars... When the radar is down, there is not adequate Non-Radar separation from the warning areas and the airways are closed as a result unless you are ADS-B equipped.

Thanks for clearing that up. Makes sense now :)

ADS-B? Fusion? , my facility doesn't even have STARS yet. God I miss it.
ARTS is actually more capable than STARS. Or it should be and had the potential to be better.
From Kecker on Reddit....

"Raytheon was supposed to field this 20 years ago, but they've repeatedly underperformed. Even to this day the system they're replacing (CARTS) is more capable and cheaper than the STARS program.

They actually had to tell Lockheed to stop adding features to the CARTS system so that Raytheon could catch up and then replace the CARTS system.

The result is a system that nobody likes and everyone is dreading. It's less capable than the current system, but it's been around for so long that at this point you have thousands of people whose careers are built around this system and there is no way it's going to be cancelled. As a result Raytheon has been able to repeatedly renegotiate longer deadlines and more money.

Source: Part of my job is teaching a course for the FAA techs that work on the CARTS system. Listening to my students bitch about the STARS program is hilarious."

The map is two years old now, but I've got one from last year. Only a few facilities changed over from ARTS to STARS.

I was one of the few using ACD which was the CARTS upgrade to compete with STARS.

STARS definitely has selling points. WX replay and the how close will they get feature.

That said, the two color WX display is not as good by a long shot, less customisation, can't minimize the HUGE system area and you lose two buttons for shortcuts.

Not to mention the keyboard feels Fischer Price my first scope quality compared to the indestructible ARTS keys.

At my AF facility we had STARS with a QWERTY keyboard. Not this ABC keyboard crap the FAA uses. I used to be able to type a VFR pop up in seconds, now I spend 5 min trying to find the N key. And I really miss the *T function more than anything else.

Splat T is in the ACD build. You don't need it if you're busy man!

I was at NorCal for a summer and got to use ACD. Didn't know anything else, and then it was another 3 years before I actually started at my first facility with ARTS2E. You're right about the STARS keyboards....they're junk compared to the ARTS tanks. Every couple weeks there's another key that's broken and falling off.

I met the main STARS guy a couple months ago that oversees all the transitioning facilities. He mentioned the STARS keyboards are $17,000 each. The QWERTY ones cost like 50 dollars he said. They'd like to find a relatively busy FAA facility that will do a beta test of the QWERTY keyboards, but he doesn't think any facility that uses the implied functions for datablock changes would like them. FAA is on board with trying them out if the facility wants to as well I think.

A80 and C90 Carts fan here. I like Stars too, but my exposure has been mainly to ARTS-III, and ARTS-IIIE, so yeah...

Personally think the CARTS is better, from the standpoint of someone who has only seen it as an observer, non real world user, get to play in the sims, user... Lol

ARTS all the way
