accident and getting hired

A little over 5 yrs ago I was involved in an accident with a student when I was a new CFI with about 300hrs tt. The FAA didn't have me go through a checkride just respond to an email. They told me that it was mostly an unavoidable situation. I have been an assistant chief for a year and have given about 1600hrs of dual in the last two years. Now I am trying to move on to something better. I have had several apps kicked out and don't know why. How does an accident affect getting on with an airline or 135? How would I find out what the FAA wrote in the report as I never was given a copy of it?

You could fill out a FIOA request for your records, that may give you the answers you're looking for.

I know plenty of people who have messed up and are flying 121 with no damage to their careers in the long run.

I knew someone who got in an accident that was purely their fault and a few years later he was at Mesa after most regionals rejected him.

Try giving them a call... I mean literally the interview is phone interview...bad pay but it's something.

What is your total time? Where are you applying? Any other blemishes on your record or resume we should know about?

Big thing is just be up front about it in an interview. It's not a career ender, but it's something that will require some explaining. Be factual and humble; whether all, partially, or not your fault. Show that you learned something from it that helped make you a better pilot, and it should be nothing more than a small bump in the road of constant improvement.

My total time 2200, 530 multi, 375 multi turbine. I've been instructing in kingair. I don't have anything other incidents or volilations. I applied at envoy only to get the sorry we can't offer an interview. Ameriflight app apparently got thrown out. Just not sure why that has been the case.

Who knows. Could be anything, not necessarily the incident in question. Keep applying to other places too. Now if we start talking a multitude of rejections, then there may be something to look into. But if its just the one incident and you were forthright about it on the application, I don't see why that wouldn't at least merit an interview, pending you meet all the othe requirements and don't have any automatic killers like criminal background..

One of the first guys I helped get hired was involved in an accident when he was a CFI.

Ameriflight said no? Jesus man what did you do!!??

Apply to Mesa, Envoy and CommuteAir.

Is your flight time current?

I know of a guy who pretty much totaled a C-130 by landing with the gear up... He still got an interview at a major...

Start putting more effort into getting hired by a regional... It may take a face to face meet and greet at a Job fair/info session for them to feel comfortable enough with you as a person to write off hiccups in your past.

Him alone, or his crew? A lot of people on that flight deck to manage to land gear up unintentionally.

I know of some guys with some pretty substantial black marks on their records that have been hired by regionals and majors.

Apply to some regionals and I'm certain you'll receive a different answer.
