As an early pilot I never wanted to be responsible for someone else's flying. I didnt want the responsibility of making them safe.
The power you have as an instructor is a bit more limited than that. You can't make a student a safe pilot. You can set the right example, demonstrate the correct way to do something, and encourage good habits. At the end of the day though, the only thing you control is whether or not to sign endorsements.
New CFIs are more concerned about this -- I know I was, at least. In practice, poor students tend to self-select themselves out by giving up, or improve with time.
