Academics @ ERAU

????? Which campus do you guys go to??? I definitaly can't say this is the "feeling" I get when I step outside to bright beautiful, freezing, bitter, dirty, desolate, isolated, Prescott AZ. I'm from Los Angeles...I'm assuming toilet man is at DBeach (more appropriately will be going to)...maybe I should transfer for my senior year

I was talking more about the scholastic/life atmosphere...not really the environment (trees, rocks, etc)....and even if I was talking about the environment I think PRC is beautiful. Granite Mountain in the moonlight is awesome....and the sky is just gorgeous!!

The town does suck (handicapped lisence plate of the world that it is) but there's still plenty to enjoy.

Don't worry, I have killed at least half of the "handicapped plates" in the area over the last few years. I'm sure they're handicap enough not to drive anymore now ~_^

I do like the "mountains" around here, but I cant stand town itself. Camping and hiking and mountain bikeing are great but looking at the dirty locals and driving around town almost makes me nauseous heh

First year is a lot of gen ed classes, and those get old. Try to work on your minor as soon as you can, as those classes are usually a blast b/c they are really focused on some small aspect. I wish I had worked on mine sooner, but at least I have some fun ones now.
Get a foreman grill, and a good microwave. You dont want to live off cafeteria food; it is terrible. Ever warmed up 2 week old meat loaf and then had the trots? That's cafeteria food, 7 days a week. Costco will be your friend for frozen food.
Desktop. It is nice to take your comp around with you (ie with a lap), but you'll find there are enough people with laptops who will come to your room, so you can utilize a faster cheaper desktop without loosing any social aspects of a mobile computer.
Dont just take classes you need, take a few every semester that are fun and that interest you. Grinding along with boring classes kills morale, so take something that will perk you up.
Have fun, and skip orientation. I didnt go to mine, and I still met enough people to feel welcome. Meet people in the first few weeks, as everyone seems to be more open when they are n00bs. Dont be shy, as everyone there is as timid as you will be. Joke around, be yourself, and have a great time. I am sure you will love the college experiance, just make sure you surround yourself with good people.
Cheers

heh

thanks a lot. that was some great information. but one thing, how soon can i work on my minor? i know that i have to take certain classes, so if there is room in my schedule should i just gradually take those classes?

Thanks Khal, I find you a nice car and treat you right, and you still ditch me. That's it, I'm gonna see other people now (hopefully more girls). LOL
Ah the minor. Take small bits at a time, or that is at least what I wished I would have done. Interject some fun into the boring grind of gen ed classes. As I said, the upper division classes and the classes for minors tend to be more fun, so if you can throw in a great class every semester and get your minor, then go for it. I would start working on it in the begining of your second year, as by that time you will have a taste of a lot of different classes, and you'll know what you want to minor in. Dont freak yourself out about which one to pick, as you have plenty of time, and can take a lot of classes. You need 12 credits of open electives, so you might find you dont like you minor, but then you have fulfilled the open elective credit.
I am working on my safety minor, which I find fascinating. I recomend it, as you look at accidents (slighty morbid though), human factor, aircraft design failures, flight training methods, and CRM. Great course of study. You know the great thing though? I could stop now, work on another, and have all of my open elective stuff done. (actually it is done, but that's another matter)
Take classes that look interesting, and make sure to take one interesting class every semester. I have had semseters where I hate all of my classes, and those drag on. Working on my minor and being in upper division classes, semesters fly by. I wish I would have spread out the fun a bit more.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Khal, RiddlePilot, and are all within 20' of eachother right now (cant get Khal out of the house, and RiddlePilot is on his way to becoming a permanent resident of the house), as are 2 other ERAU students, so there is a fair amount of student knowledge here.
Have a good one, and trust me, you'll enjoy ERAU.

Toilet boy, the schedule here is really flexible. The trick is you can take classes you want but you need to make sure you'll have all your pre-reqs done on time. Like, you dont want to put off a PS class because you need that for a few AS classes. But something like CS109 a [expletive deleted] class that doesnt go towards anything else, you can put off for a while, despite them trying to force you in. Just do your research and plan ahead, then you'll be set!

And Bren...does this mean we're breaking up?

They tried to make me take UNIV 101 but I said no. I'd like to insert my own expletive about that class.

And CS 109 was easy I finished all the assignments in like 2 weeks asked the instructor if I just turned it all in would I need to show up anymore. He said no, I passed. Easy.

I am coming out of Riddle with Commercial Multi Instrument with the 20 hrs CRJ FTD. I was going to get my CFI etc but elected not to and save the money for now and pursue a charters or possible the pace program for Mesa. I also went for the ride with the ATC minor which is very attractive with the amount of money that you could make coming out of college.

I personally went to orientation and that is where I got my first T-shirt from ERAU and also my meal ticket for the day. I believe I also received my Eagle Card at orientation.

Well good luck with everything, I am sure everything will go smoothly.

Outfly, maybe. How much actual you gettin' out there in AZ?

Ah it is so true. The only IP's here with actual are ones who get it somewhere else. Too much convective activity or as Khal said freezing levels to do anything. Funny how that works.
We're some of the best clear and a million VFR pilots you will ever see....LMAO. Good stuff guys.

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE INFORMATION!

it's been very informative and really helping me make the transition to campus life. im really excited about going to ERAU and proudly tell anyone who inquires about my college plans. however, i was thinking since some pilots say that it would be good to major in something else instead of AS, would it be better to switch my major since i'll be flying anyways. i was thinking that maybe Aerospace studies would be more well rounded or something like that. im not sure, just looking for some ideas.

I was in STG before I switched to AS. Especially with the Security AOC for today's post-9/11 world...I bet it'd be a good degree to have. Do they have STG at DAB?
