well, ill be @ ERAU daytona this fall majoring in AS and im very excited about the whole thing. i just wanted to know...

-what can i expect in terms of my schedule, what classes will i probably be taking, getting all my work done, and how different the approach to academics is considering that this is an aviation centered school?

-whats orientation like? what am i going to be doing for those few days?

-transition to dorm life?

-one last time, laptop/notebook or desktop?

more to come.

I went to PRC but I can try and answer your questions.

Orientation sucks....at any college you go to for that matter. If you REALLY want to go then go, but it's all a bunch of namby "getting-to-know-you" crapola. Doing those "team-building" and other exercises that are boring and needless. It's embarassing and I didn't learn squat about the school.

As for Laptop/Desktop...it's really up to your preferences. I had a desktop that worked fine and I had friends that had laptops that worked fine. It all depends on you. That being said it's much more fun to play FS on a desktop. :]

Transition to dorm life from home? I'm assuming? Eh....I dunno. It's actually kinda boring in a way. Except you don't have people yelling at you to pick up your room (well maybe if you get a cranky roomie but other than that.... ) Plus, you can leave whenever you want. And you have to fill out a contract thingy with your roomates talking about if it's okay to have people over etc. It's a pita but y'all need to get that outta the way as soon as possible.

As for classes.... first semester in AS you'll probably be taking:
Ground school
Physics
Math
Obligatory English credit
maybe history

I dunno...it all depends on what your advisor signs you up for and what you've done in HS. Getting work done is the same as it was in HS except there's more of it. Not harder necessarily, just more. Don't freak out about it. At Riddle the academic approach is different in that everyone has at least a working knowledge of aviation. For example in my physics and math class instead of questions like, "A train leaves Brooklyn at 50 mph...." it was, "An aircraft leaves Chicago..." And I have a feeling we spent a LOT more time on studying vectors than I would've at any other college.

Hope any of that helps.....

I can't really contribute to this thread much because I haven't went to Riddle, but I have been to college. Some of the people I talked to complained about limited desk space in their dorms(different school), so if you can afford it, get a laptop. My recommendations would be something by Toshiba, one with a long battery life. Don't bother packing a huge processor in there for school stuff, unless of course you want to play video games IN class. Rock on.

-Hi this is Tyler, I can tell you from experiance that the dorms here are pretty •. What dorm are you in? I am in Doolittle so I could tell you everything about that Prison. Riddle was very exciting and fun for about the first 5 days then it started going down hill. I am also an AS major, I came in with no ratings and I will be going home in a week with my private liscence. Holy [expletive deleted] if you have yours comin in you wont know much compared to someone who gets theirs here but you'll be able to smile after hearing how much you saved.haha. I have spent over $12000 on my private only WTF that is the average, if they tell you other wise they are full of it.
-A desk top and Lap top take up the same amount of room on your desk when they are plugged in so it really doesnt matter what you want to do with that it's about 50/50 here. They both will work well.
-I have been very dissapointed with Riddle, there is no school spirit here. I am included in that non riddle association it's like all they want to do is take your money here. It all starts with the food, $8 for a meal plan that you get a 6in sub that the little ol lady wont give you more that 4 meatballs bc they tell her that is all she can give. You will resort to stealing after the first semester just to feel like your getting your moneys worth.
-I cant tell if this is a girl or guy but i'll assume it's a guy. This will hit you hard unless you think like an AE major which are all over this place. There are no girls here at all, it's not a good environment for any man unless you want to join one of the gay frats not gay bc i dont like them but GAY bc they are. The funny thing is they say it's 6to1 guys to girls but I see a few that look kinda like girls but i'm not for sure, that's how bad it is. My friend the other guy on this name Zach can come in and say i talked to the hot girl today and everyone in the hall knows exactly who he's talkin about.
-Well I really dont know what kind of a person you are but give this place at least a year to find out for yourself that is how you will learn. But there is a chance that you wont see any of us we are lookin into UND.

$12000 on my private

Holy crap! I m due to take my private checkride in about a week here and i will have ended up spending about $4500 going the FBO route.

TandZ is right.....the food at any college sucks ass. Look into getting a microwave/fridge. Just buy one that the college will allow in...otherwise they'd charge you too much to rent them.

EasyMac is your friend.

Well why don't you just push this kid to the ground and stomp on him. I bet he is really excited now to come to ERAU.

I will be a graduating senior as of a week. And it isn't as bad as the past posts. I believe that a University is what you make of it. The reason why TandZpilots downs the school is because of his attitude towards it. I actually had a dorm in Doolittle, 352 if I remember correctly and I had the most fun a college student could have. We never slept because there was always something going on. We did have 8 girls on our floor but the were still all ugly. It truly breaks down to what you are wanting from school. If you want a good education that is based on aviation this is the place to be. If you want a party school then you go to one of them.

I will admit that ERAU doesn't have a whole lot of school spirit but it might have something to do with the idea that our cheerleading team isn't anything even great to look at and our football team consists of flag's. I also have to say that the Frat's are Gay but whatever makes ya happy.

Daytona Beach doesn't offer too much past the beach or a trip to Orlando. But there is always Spring Break and if you can't get laid during Spring break you are either an Ugly Mother or your gay. And Embry Riddle has a lot of both. I mean Spring Break lasts four months and it is a party every night. The university average GPA drops quite a bit in the spring semester. I personally work at a restaurant on beach side and it is the way to go. I average 100 - 150 during the week and up to 300 on weekends. You also meet a lot of people including some really hot girls and many pilots. I have a list of contacts that I have met at work.

The whole deal with the money involved with your private is due to the fact that it takes on average longer to get the maneuvers down and it waste's like 30 min a flight getting in and out of Daytona. As you progress in your flight training you learn the airplane faster and perform better and this is why it cost less down the road. For the kid that paid 12,000 for his private in my estimation did not study his flows and know the maneuvers cold. Or he had a rough time landing. I personally got all my ratings for less than 6,000 a piece. Now I know that the prices have changed a bit but there is no reason for 12,000. He is going to have one hell of a time in Instrument unless he studies. If I were you I would get at least your private somewhere else over the summer so then you will be able to get your CFI and CFII your JR or SR year based on how often you fly etc. You will also spend less money. I would however recommend that you get your Instrument here based on the quality of instruction.

On to the computer question, if you are looking into laptops I would highly recommend looking into www.powernotebooks.com they offer the most bang for the buck. Will out perform all laptops at best buy etc for the same price.

I usually don't post to often especially with length like this but I didn't want one unhappy student to make you look at ERAU any different. It truly is what you make of it and I am sorry if TandZ is sexually frustrated.

Good luck and if you have any question's feel free to PM me...

Tazman, that was well thought out, but it was pretty difficult reading it, and I couldn't feel you inflection at all. Maybe a comma here, a comma there?? Surely, they discussed that during your time at Riddle....

Geez, Lloyd. You sound like my Tech Report Writing instructor.

Riddle only requires 6 hours of English, I think. DDL requires 9, so I had to take that class to finish out my English reqs. After that, I can go back to misspellyung adn bad gramur.

ultimately, i chose ERAU DAB b/c of the similarities to my hometown here in cali. i live five minutes from the beach and the towns are similar. i definitely see myself living in that type of environment versus PRC for the next four years of my life. and hey, dont mind the flight across the country. ive visited the campus during my junior year and knew that its a place i could do well, considering the atmosphere. im sure there is much more to learn about the campus but for now my decision stands.

I'm going into their aeronautical engineering program in the fall at DAB. Any experiences with the classes? If you have trouble, are there oppurtunities for tutoring and such...and how are the science and math courses at riddle? I heard calculators aren't allowed.

They allow calculators...in fact sometimes they're a requirement because part of the curriculum is showing you how to use them to do the problems.

Yes there's oppourtunities for tutoring. If you can't get an appt with a tutor (they're free and all but sometimes overloaded) then go to the prof's office hours!! They LOVE it when you do that! They're required to be there and usually have nothing to do but play soliatire on the computer and love it when students come in to get help of just to talk about whatever. Remember...you are paying them for the information that they have....use that! Too many students loose sight of that fact sadly.

I think the whole English thing is over rated. As long as I can fly an airplane that is what I will get paid for. If I wanted to make money on how I write I would be an editor. Thanks for your input though.

i'm joining the AS program this fall in daytona as well as toilette (what does your name mean in french? in the toilet?

)

when i see this anti-riddle garbage about how so and so didnt' pass their checkride or ended up paying 12k for a license..i dont think any less of the school but just of the pilot who apparently didn't study and prepare well enough.

come on people some of us are actually excited about going to riddle and starting a new phase in life....try encouraging us.

tazman, great post!! what ratings are you coming out with? you only averaged 6k for each?

Oh don't get me wrong Riddle is exciting and it's a GREAT school. Just that college sucks....ANY college. The food sucks and trying to get anything done with the Admin sucks.

Oh and eau de toilette literally means "Toilet water" but toilet means more like bathroom in this sense. The correct translation would be "perfume/cologne".

mostly, the environmen/atmosphere attracted me the most. i knew that i could get similar educations if not exact at either campus but i also considered where i could live for the next four years of my life. there's a big difference even if the distance from home is a factor. i mean, how could i leave the beach having lived five minutes from the beach in southern california all my life. i also wanted to leave for college, as much as possible, only to force myself to become more independent and knowing what im capable of, i could definitely make ways to come home from arizona.

The environment/atmosphere at Riddle is great! I mentioned in a different thread that even though I'm still studying flight at Western...there's just no aviation atmosphere here. At Riddle it's a 24/7 thing and it's great!!
