About the "Bid Alert"

Just a friendly reminder for those that are planning on attending the event, to actually bid the days off! ;)

Last year, believe it or not, I actually didn't have the day off but JoelT saved my bacon by swapping recurrent training days with me!

Holy cow, me not being able to attend my own event was a clear and present danger more than a lot of people believe!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Yeah, completely unrelated story to trying to get time off for important stuff.

I couldn't make NJC last year because I was getting married. A few months before the event, I told one of the chief pilots I needed the time off. He said "no problem, let us know a little bit closer to the event and we'll help you out"

So When I got the bid results and saw I didn't have the days off (I was 3 from the bottom of the list on my airplane) I went in and talked to another guy. He said "well, try to swap/exchange it and see if that works. If not come see us and we'll get it taken care of"

Nobody would exchange with me and crew scheduling wouldn't approve my exchanges. So a week before the wedding, I go to yet a third chief pilot and he says "yeah, I don't know that I can approve that. Reserve staffing is pretty low"

I about jumped over the table. I had to tell him "yeah, so I like this job...but I'm surely not going to skip my own wedding for this job. I'm just letting you know I'm not going to be here..."

Then he thought about it and realized how ridiculous he was being and I got the time off.

Livin the dream baby!

We will now return you to your scheduled programming.

I still remember that.

DaaaaAAaAAaaang! There's got to be a little more clarity there for "Life Events" like marriage, child birth, etc.

Otherwise, "I'm sorry but my husband is in critical condition, he's not going to be at work today"

"Whuh whuh WHAAHahHAAAAAT?! We don't have the reserves the cover his absence! OMG OMG OMG he's gonna have to call his chief pilot!"

I've often thought about the following. If I'm ever in a really bad accident on the way to work, when I'm finally in a position to check my messages on my phone I'm sure there will be 8 angry messages from scheduling "Hi, this is XXXX from scheduling. It is 10 minutes past your scheduled duty time so we are giving you a missed trip..."

:hiya: Geez thanks! No, he did not! That's the last time I do you a favor.

But, you're welcome!

No Show Mo Fo!

I remember hearing about your nightmare.

Reserve staffing is low...say it isn't so. Jackasses.

Man, that sucks! I got married last year too, and the training department bent over backwards several times so that I could have the entire weekends leading up to it off for planning stuff with my wife. I've had similar good luck with schedulers for other very minor life events, which is a little surprising.

So, I start reading Dough's post and I thought to myself, "Self, was I passed out during the entire month of October 2009? I could have sworn my base month was September although, who freak'n knows now!". I mean, it sounds like something I would have done but, I'll take the credit if offered! ;)

That sounds a lot like why I left my CFI job. "Resign, or we'll let you go for not being at work that week".

As long as there was beer with the food, it's all good!

btw, I got 606 this month on the 17th, D period. Anyone need to trade?

If I had $10 for every time I've heard "I have a wedding and the CP told me..." Even for THE wedding. It seems like we all get the same treatment at our airlines. Well, I got time off for my wedding. They gave me more than I asked for...about 18 months. It was great!!

Question regarding bidding off for ACE. I consider this a sick call worthy event. Is there a way to bid that keeps the red flags from going up If I don't get the days off and decide to call in? I'm thinking of making my bid very generic, keeping my days off request clear of that week, and focusing on specific trips that will give me what I need. Anyone have approaches that have worked in the past? We currently use Navtech PBS.

When W.C. (who is a freedom a-lister) was a RCP at Mesa (Regional Chief Pilot) a pilot came in to his office and said he had to be taken off his trip because a family member passed away and he had to go home now. W.C. snarkily replied 'Why couldn't this happen on your days off???'
