AA767 at Rio de Janeiro Blows Tires, Haters-Gonna-Hates to Gate

"An American Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N380AN performing flight AA-251 (dep Dec 29th) from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) to Rio de Janeiro,RJ (Brazil), landed on Galeao Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport's runway 15 but blew all 4 right main gear tyres. The aircraft did not stop but taxied to the gate at high engine power with smoke trailing the right main gear. Runway, taxiway and apron surfaces received scratches."

Wonder why taking it to the gate? Is it an SOP of some kind? I could understand clearing the runway off a high speed and stopping there; but to take it to the gate? Interesting. I mean, the bogie is already smoking, unknown what kind of extra damage is down there to lines, metals, or overheated rubber, etc.

In all seriousness though, it's possible they didn't know, or at least didn't have a full picture of what was going on with that gear.

I would hope that's the case, but the taxi power needed I would think would be noticed as higher than usual, as well as brake/steering effectiveness to some degree. Would wonder what then local or ground controller was doing or looking at to where they didn't notice. Or even other aircraft for that matter.

Just seems mega risk to do, if they were aware. Would be interesting to know what the case was.

Well it's south America so it's possible atc was listening to a futbol game or doing anything other than watching traffic. ..

I can't imagine there would be any routine or logical reason to knowingly taxi in like this. That's why I'd like to know more.

And I find it hard to fathom how the pilots didn't know all the right mains were gone. First clue is a call from the head flight attendant: "Captain, the drinks in first class are all sloshing out of the glass to starboard."
