From the APFA:

This is a special APFA HotLine update for Wednesday, February 25.

This afternoon, Lauri Curtis, American’s Vice President of Flight Service, advised in an email and HI6 message that, despite the attempts over the last several months to accommodate the Flight Attendant manning overages caused by schedule reductions and reduced passenger loads, the company has been unable to sufficiently absorb the expected additional Flight Attendant headcount. It is therefore notifying the 410 most junior of our members that they are subject to furlough effective April 1, 2009.

We are extremely disappointed that the company has had to resort to this action, though are hopeful that through the contractual procedures of Overage Leaves and Partnership Flying proffers, and the re-offering of the Travel Separation Program, the overage will be reduced or eliminated through voluntary means and will thereby reduce, or eliminate, any layoffs.

Your APFA leadership has worked diligently with the company on mitigation efforts since the initial overages announced last summer: from the Voluntary Bridge to Retirement, Overage Leaves and Partnerships in July, followed by the Planned Leaves of Absence proffered in January and the recently awarded Overage Leaves, Partnerships and Travel Separation programs.

Now again, in accordance with Article 16 of the contract, Overage Leaves and Partnership Flying will be proffered. Additionally, the Company is renewing the offer of the Travel Separation Program to eligible Flight Attendants. We encourage anyone able and willing to take advantage of one of these in the current round to do so.

We know that, as uncomfortable the prospect of potential layoff is to our most junior members, it also further delays the hoped-for return to work of those presently furloughed. Recognizing this, and the ongoing uncertainty faced by our furloughees, the APFA Board of Directors has achieved and unanimously approved an extension of the recall rights of those currently furloughed Flight Attendants by an additional two years, and an offer to them of a special Travel Separation Program. These Flight Attendants will receive a letter from the Company soon with more information and instructions.

As we have in the past, APFA will be updating the Reduction in Force page of our website with informational documents as they become available and, for those interested in proffering Partnership Flying, a Partner Finder. We will also update the Furlough/Recall page on a continuous basis as we receive information and locate resource links helpful to those who may find themselves again in a furlough situation.

We are hopeful that the number of potential furloughs can be significantly mitigated through the various voluntary methods. In the meantime your leadership remains dedicated to exhausting all possible means to preserve the livelihood of our members.

Very sad.

my mom was a F/A for TWA when AA bought them out and then they all got laid off.

great to see them doing it... again.... :sarcasm:

:(

I hate seeing this

My mom was with ATA for 10 years. We were in PHNL when we fund out, not so much fun...:(

In retrospect, that would made #3 for Amber if she'd taken the recall. At least, I think my basic math is correct on that.

I was never offered a second recall. I was furloughed (2nd time) on 15OCT02, and was not senior enough to be recalled during any subsequent recall events, so my 5 years recall rights expired on 15OCT07. On that date I was removed from the AA F/A seniority list, so any further recalls/furloughs can have no possible effect on me personally.

Ah. I thought you were but the kids meant no flying. My bad.

So Climbto350 indicates American Eagle is hiring, but that's still not the same. At least AFA still represents them- IF climbto350 is posting REAL job openings!

No worries.

The only thing that will get me back on the list is complete restoration of the seniority list. That is about as likely to happen as full restoration of the APFA contract that was signed in early (pre-9/11) 2001... In other words: not gonna happen. :o

Today's update from the APFA, including a final headcount number:

This is APFA President Laura Glading with a Special APFA HotLine update for Tuesday, March 10.

Today the company announced the results of the Overage Leave, Partnership Flying and Travel Separation Program proffers which were offered to reduce or eliminate the possibility of furlough.

While we are pleased that there were still some of our members not already off payroll who were able to take advantage of these options it was not enough to offset the furlough. Regrettably this will result in the furlough of 323 of our members effective April 1, 2009.

The most senior Flight Attendant who will be furloughed has a current DECS seniority number of 16900. These members were only recently recalled back to active status and of course this will be most devastating for them. Our heart goes out to our members who will soon be without income, active coverage for health benefits and the career they love.

This furlough will have a further negative impact for all APFA members as it will prolong the period of stagnation which results in increasingly senior reserve lists and limited transfer opportunities

Rest assured APFA will do all possible to assist our members who are about to be furloughed. Please refer to the Furlough page of the APFA website for information as it becomes available, including recent changes to the Federal legislation -- part of the stimulus package -- which will help cushion the costs associated with COBRA health care coverage. One of the provisions provides a government subsidy of 65% of the cost of COBRA coverage.

APFA has also worked with the company to reoffer the voluntary Travel Separation Program to the 323 Flight Attendants being furloughed. The company will be sending a personal notice to each of these Flight Attendants. Those no longer subject to furlough will receive a letter from the company via Fed Ex as well.

Our base and headquarters representatives remain available to assist our members affected by this reduction

We had quite a few senior flight attendants that were furloughed based in STL, and they just went back. I wish them all luck.

The other day i took a flight from JFK to MIA on American Airlines A300 and that has got the be the WORSE flight i was ever on, in terms of customer service wise. Before i bored the flight i bought a fruit bowl and as the plane was getting ready to taxi out i politely asked one of the F/As if they can take my empty bowl and discard it for me. To my surprise HE gave me this really nasty look!!! The service throughout the flight was pretty bad as well. I bet they are all miserable that their jobs are in jeopardy, anyone would but don't take it out on the customers....come on now..

I also just want to add to this..

On the return flight from MIA to JFK, i was again on American Airlines but on a 767 and the F/As were pretty nasty to other passengers as well. This elderly guy was in a wrong assigned seat and was asked to move. When he got up, one of the F/As apologized to another passenger saying "sorry for the inconvinience, but he (the eldely guy) can't see well so he is having problems being in his correct seat. She said it so loudly and with a very nasty tone in her voice.

I am not trying to bash AA at all, it is one of my most preffered airlines to fly on but their cabin service has been getting very ridiculous as of late, where they are starting to mistreat their customers.
