AA Passenger going Berzerk on the ramp @ CLT

Also, here’s what white peivledge gets you - not being beat down.

Sigh.

I'm not sure how pathetic one needs to be to try and twist something into some kind of social justice warrior racial statement but since I personally watched this guy get gang tackled, beat down and carried off in an ambulance out the cockpit window of my aircraft parked at gate 28 and there were several videos made looking out our crew room window located in between gates 26 and 28 of him getting beat down I would have say - severely pathetic.

It was a joke - but apparently that phrase triggers a lot of white dudes.

Ahhh, we need video.

Sorry dude but we aren’t cops. I’m not gonna risk getting punched in the face and getting my eye jacked up or something for some wacko passenger. If he’s hurting somone else and there may be an opportunity to do something sure but I’ll let him run around the ramp all he wants. Not gonna put my medical at risk for some crazy dude, I’ll let the rampers or rent a cops handle that.

Not sure if it's still the case, but in 2011, the Charlotte Airport Police were responsible for medical response inside the terminal and for an aircraft attached to the jetway. Middle of the summer time and I had a passenger (male, mid 70s) apparently run from the other side of the airport to catch our flight. He's totally out of breath when he gets on board (we were parked at a remote spot with no jetway out at the end of the E gates) and sweating. He gets about halfway to his seat and collapses. My FO sees it happen, grabs the radio and calls ops to request medics (which is company policy). Meanwhile out FAs go to work on the guy.

And then we wait.

And wait.

And wait some more.

My FO and I call ops and ramp control 5 or 6 times over the next 10 minutes while we wait for the medics. Meanwhile the guy in the back is still breathing... kind of... but unconscious.

12 minutes after the FO called, two cops walk over to the airplane and yell up the stairs to ask if "somebody needed something". They don't even have their med bag with them... it's back on their golf cart they left parked inside the terminal. One of them kind of ambles back inside to get it while the other one comes on board and starts working the patient.

After that I never bothered calling ops for medical and just called ground and asked them to roll the trucks to the gate.

Jesus.

That's part of the reason I absolutely *despise* CLT as an airport. It is a horrible place to connect. The lack of a decent transit system there - and no, moving sidewalks do not count - means the Olympic Terminal Sprint is a regular occurrence there. Given the number of obese pax I've seen there (is it a S. Carolina thing?) it astounds me that there aren't more cardiac events in the terminal.

But! Hey! Creepy restroom attendants!

Loathe CLT, I do.

Hands in pockets is a classic de-escalation posture.
Removing the ID lanyard gives the nutjob less to grab & control.
Clip-on tie? You betcha!

That would have been me too. Hell, I probably wouldn’t even be that close.

Observe and report from a distance, but someone having s manic episode will outfight you every time.

I should have been clearer in my criticism of the pilot with his hands in his pockets. Why are you standing that close to a nut who's swinging around and you have your hands tucked away making yourself vulnerable. We aren't paid to deal with that and being anywhere near an incident never ends well. Best to just stay on the plane.
