A350XWB vs. B777!

At the rate Airbus is going Boeing will have a replacement for the 787 by the time they get the A350 up and running. :sarcasm:
Boeing is and will continue to remain number 1, even with their delay on the 787 test flight.

It's not possible to make a comparative analysis yet because Airbus is not forthcoming on the exact statistics of the A350. They haven't even finalized the design.

I agree the A350 will be a good competitor to the B777. It is the market they are going after. The B787 is a replacement for the B767 and A330 size aircraft and even the 787-1000 ( if made ) is only around 300 seats. That makes the A350 a competitor against the B777 series.

In an interesting discussion our aircraft procurement VP mentioned how the A340-500 forced Boeing to improve the original B777. That is why the Er and LR series has come out. Competition is healthy and forces the manufacturers to improve their products.

It is possible that a next gen B777 will come out with some of the technology of the B787 and B747-800. That could increase the market life span of the series. Right now the B777 is a great aircraft and will continue to be the best aircraft in the 300 to 400 seat range until the A350 comes out. That is another 6 years from now. In that time I could foresee an improved B777 series that would mitigate the efficieny advantages of the newer A350 technology to the point that the B777 remains a market leader.

A large part of that is acquisition cost. With the U.S. Dollar continuing to tank the advantage that Airbus had over Boeing in purchase price is evaporating. Airbus has always sold aircraft at lower cost than Boeing. That has been the decider in many aircraft procurement decisions. With that advantage gone many more airlines will choose Boeing over Airbus.

The A350 should be an interesting plane. I'm especially interested in the "XWB" part... I wonder if that will set the standard for widebodies of the near future.

It's an airplane. It's a tube with wings. So as long as it gets from point a to point b profitably, airlines will buy it and fly it.
:banghead: I know, we should be flying New York to Tokyo on a suborbital hypersonic trajectory by now... (only semi:sarcasm:) Instead we're still cranking out variations of 50 year old technology...

The A350, though simply paper currently sounds sweet. Thanks for your post Typhoon.

I'd very much be happy to see what Boeing can come up with to combat the A350, a next gen 777 would be awesome and far cheaper than a next gen 350 seat long range twin.
