A340 Engine Shutdown

Both pilots reading the checklist, nobody flying the airplane during the initial portion.

Captain very calm and relaxed throughout, which certainly set a good tone in the flight deck.

Captain used a good technique to summarize and recap in order to solicit information from the F.O.. I'd probably go with a more direct open question like, "what are your thoughts?" "anything else we can do or that you can think of?" but still okay.

Why were there cameras all set-up in the first place? Was this staged or did it just happened on a flight that was getting filmed?

If you have seen any of the "Just-Planes" videos or clips of them online, they were filming one of them on this flight. I've never watched one through but you can buy a DVD (geared for aviation enthusiasts etc.) and it follows the flight from pre-flight to parking, hence the go-pro cameras setup with mics as well as the cameraman on the jumpseat.

I was amazed at how much the plane did for them. Everything from automatic load shedding and dump securing, to displaying checklist items. Pretty cool.

But apparently it's not smart enough to select MCT on its own. -eyebrow-

Pretty good demonstration of how the need for flight engineers went away with the new technology, huh? ;)

The other side of it, the need to call MX to find out what would happen if they disconnected an IDG... engineer could have told them that quicker.

Oh absolutely.

I wish I could fly in a three-pilot cockpit! If but for a little while. You're lucky to be one of the last of this generation to at least do that for a time.

Can someone please bring back the DC-8??

Begging your pardon, but I would hope that's a question that a type-rated pilot can (should, and will) answer...

(nonetheless, mad respect for the plumbers!)

lol if you think some aircraft in the next decade won't have one airborne crewmember and a second working multiple flights simultaneously via telepresence, just like the engineer on the radio.

I don't.

In order for that to be allowed, you will need a world wide standard on how to implement this, whose equipment to use, the fail safes, etc. They can't even agree on transition altitudes/levels country to country, I don't think they will be able to implement this infrastructure behind this theory.

For example, will the Chinese/Russians trust a United States airliners to be flying over their country from a 'central command location' if the one guy/gal has an issue up there? The same thing can be said in reverse as well...

As much as I hate to agree with you on principle (;)) - you're right. Now, I could see - maybe, if a whole host of technologies line up at once - that happening on domestic flights, but never anyone working more than one flight at a time - what happens if you have multiple emergencies at once?

Mind blown?
You've obviously never flown an E-Jet.

LAND AT THE NEAREST SUITABLE AIRPORT.
"If you've got an APU, start it."
"Balance the gas."
"For landing, use flaps 5. Vref = Vref FULL + 20 knots. Multiply the full flaps unfactored landing distance by 1.40. Th-th-that's all, folks!"

Now, I could see - maybe, if a whole host of technologies line up at once - that happening on domestic flights,

Nope.

It won't be worth it to only do it on domestic flights from a financial perspective. That isn't even factoring in the point that doing this would require the ATC System to be updated beyond what NEXTGEN will provide and we see how that is being developed.

BUT WILL PANTS BE MANDATORY?
