A question for airline pilots

This is for regional and corporate pilots too.

I'm sure you've been asked several times before, but what is that first day like. When you are flying an actual rev flight with passengers.

I plan to experiace this one day and I think I would just be so extatic I'd pass out from the shock that I finally made it.

That smily is so COOL. Anyway, what was your first day like.

Thanks

Tom

I was so busy and unsure of myself, I hardly thought twice that my first flight was a milestone. Much more exciting is your first day of ground school...your first day on the property. Or, getting the phone call offering you the job.

It felt a lot like the simulator actually. Your first few days are very busy and everything feels like the traffic is flowing at 100mph, but you're putting along at 20mph.

I was nervous, but excited. Unlike lots of guys, I had flown the airplane before. Usually the first revenue flight is the first flight in the REAL airplane, all of the training having been in the sim. We do a couple of landings in the actual plane and a brief checkride. This is due to a certification issue of the sim.

The only time I really thought about the people in the back is the first takeoff when the captain said, "Your brakes and power" and gave me the plane. Other than that you are so busy just trying to stay caught up that there's little time to think about anything else.

For me the hardest part of IOE (Initial Operating Experience) was the non-flying duties. That's really what IOE is for . . . to learn all the ATC stuff for the airports you go to, calling ops with times, doing the PA anouncements, releasing the FA, filing out the airplane logbook, etc.

The general belief is that once you've made it to IOE, you know how to fly the plane, you just need to learn all the ancilary stuff. The IOE checkairmen really try to make sure you have a good time. They try to make things as stress free as possible.

IOE only lasts about 25 hours and then you're able to fly with just about anyone. We have a "green on green" rule which requires at least one of the crew to have 100 hours in the plane. So a brand new captain and a brand new FO wouldn't fly together.

Hey thanks for the replys. Thats pretty interesting.

I guess I would probly find the phone call the most exciting. Heck, I was excited when Office Max called me for a highschool part time job.

My first day, because of fog in SMF and flow into SFO, my 8-leg day turned into two! We were WAY behind schedule and got to our overnight 6 hours late! I had my wings and name tag on the wrong side of my shirt and my eapulets were on backwards (they were these old tapered ones). Welcome to the airlines!

I rekon getting the phone call, especially after you think that you did not get the gig, would be the best feeling.

Cant wait for that day...

Cheers

This was my first day at my present job ....
Flew 10.3 hrs / 15hrs Duty with 8 legs.
MDT-HUF-SUS-MDT-SAV-SUS-MQY-JQF-MDT.
On top of all that had a starter generator go bad and had to Return to Base for maintenance. At the end of the day the Chief Pilot asked me if I wanted to stay on ... hell yeah.
