Umm, dumbass, it's a for profit business, who's ultimate goal is to make a profit for it's shareholders. It's not a public utility like the bus or subway. What does being a taxpayer have to do with this?
 
Airlines aren't supposed to make money. But they are supposed to have world class service and amenities. They aren't supposed to have triple digit fares or any fees either.
