A&P apprenticeship?? Some questions....

Has anyone gotten an A&P certificate this way? I've been toying with the idea of getting an A&P for some time now, and would like to find an economical way of achieving it without having to attend a part 147 school.

Are most FBOs willing to hire people without any previous mechanical experience? How long will it take to meet the needed experience listed in part 61 if someone were to do this part-time? Lastly, how should experience be logged to show to the FAA that it had happened?

I don't know that "most" FBO's would be interested. You really need an in with an established mechanic. Then, they aren't gonna want to pay you much cause you can't sign things off. But if you had a good A and P friend that wanted to work with you as an apprentice, then maybe, but I've never heard of this done before. I think you need 2ooo hours of "apprentice time" before you could take the practical. That's a long time. I think A and P school is a better option. Just walking in to a random FBO and proposing this, I don't think you'll have much luck.

I too, am interested in possibly doing this. But I get the feeling that most FBOs don't even want to go there.

There is not a hard hour requirement for earning the A&P experience. Part 65 states that it is calendar months, not hours. . It is up to the FAA inspector that is authorizing the applicant to determine the experience level. I have heard some inspectors asking for 30 months of pay stubs, and other inspectors going with "Well there is one day you worked this month...." and not be concerned with hours.

While talking with the inspector on duty at my FSDO, they referred me to the FSIMS website to read and understand the requirements prior to driving to the FSDO.

The head of maintenance of the FBO in my hometown told me that there's so little work for his staff of two AMTs right now that it isn't worth it to commence an apprenticeship with willing people on the street. I don't know how similar the situation is with other FBOs....
