A note

There are plenty of people doing what needs to be done to try to make things better, they just don't advertise it to get praise on a message board.

Yep. What I do within the ranks of my company is a private matter. I don't need a pat on the back from anyone for trying to better my life. What I do, I do for me, no one else.

The problem isn't the amount of people not being involved

I beg to differ. That is the major problem in this profession. Not enough people will step up to get the job done. Not enough pilots volunteer for their union. Not enough pilots read the communications that come from their union. Not enough pilots attend picketing events and rallies. Not enough pilots will contribute to the PAC. I could go on and on. Participation, or rather lack there of, is what is killing us.

What I do, I do for me, no one else.

Gee, what a magnanimous way to live your life. :banghead:

Which I wholeheartedly agree with.

If you're a sole individual working for a company, then hell yeah that's the mentality you need.

But when you're part of a large group of individuals who share the same responsibilities for the company, it's only right to think as a collective body for the ultimate success of that body.

Further, while you may not be out to better the life (by way of work rules, pay, QOL enhancements) of your peers the reality is that some of us don't mind trying to improve the conditions which our we all work under. Not too sure why that is such a horrible idea.

Well, the pilots of my airline tried to unionize years ago and was told to go pound sand by ALPA because they weren't big enough (approx. 150). That being said while our pay is not the best it is definitely on par. When you throw in the bene's we are far and above anyone one else out there for what we do. Considering the mother company has said up front if we organize all contracts are cancelled. So where does that leave a body? The company pretty much keeps everyone happy and well compensated so why would we organize?
Which leads me to my next question-If I don't look out for myself who will?
Whose going to pay my car payment, mortgage, retirement, vacation or my education? My union brothers? I guess I'm a little old school in my beliefs-hardwork and self reliance are the keys to a succesful future.

What airline do you work for? Do you know that ALPA organized a small carrier in Canada last year that only has a few dozen pilots? Things have changed.

Every company makes that threat during a union drive. It's hollow BS. Don't fall for it.

For career protection. Not to mention that your management can change on a dime, leaving you with a company that doesn't make everyone happy and well compensated, and then it's too late.

A union. Get one on property and start working together to build up each others' careers instead of just looking out for number one. You can accomplish a lot by working together instead of by yourself.

Not going to go into details on an open forum but some "friends" at the old company were told the same thing by ALPA. I'm not bitter about it but it definitely prevented us from having the protection we wanted.

If your management team gets it great. To bad a lot of companys don't see the big picture. If most companys took the added cost of a union and used that money on employees there wouldn't be a nice for unions.

Having known Seggy since his first day as a 121 pilot candidate, and knowing his demeanor. I'd say that what he is trying to do is not self-serving, and he believes passionatley in the cause of improving our profession and serving honorably as the CJC MEC Chairman. Whether anything will be accomplished is NOT up to Mark, but we can do our best to be supportive of his efforts.

ex-Navy Rotorhead

I've been here for a while now. I will say that Seggy was gung-ho the first time around on the organizing committe if I remember correctly. That was prior to his interview with Delta, and he was just as active the second time around in organizing at Colgan.

I do not always agree with Seggy (user fees), but it is unfair to call him anything but consistant with his trade unionism and his activities.

Yeah I remember when i first met him a couple years ago he was very involved in bringing a union on property and that was before the economy took its major nosedive and the reduction in hiring. He's been hard at it for quite awhile.
