A.net

I can't imagine the cost of a site like a.net. I am sure it is a small fortune to host all that. I suspect one day that site will just go away and the guy that runs it will just pack it in. I guess it depends on how much $$ he is making off of it or if his university in norway or wherever he is gets tired of helping him host it all.

I think they are in the process of updating the forums and how you view some of the photos though so I doubt its days are over yet. I think it is just an upgrade in progress right now.

I would definately be up for posting photos on here if you were to start such a thing on this website. I have over 200 pictures on jp.net and would gladly post them and others on this website if given the chance. From what I've heard hosting one of those photo sites can actually bring in quite a bit of cash. I've heard some numbers, but they may just be rumors so I'm not going to post them here.

Hey Doug (or anyone else). I'm looking to get a small digital camera for traveling and cockpit shooting. Keeping in mind I'm a captain and therefore cheap, any suggestions (careful, I know I gave you a lot of rope there).

If you are looking for something that you can drop into your pocket and go, I'd recommend the Dimage Xt or Xg.

Here is a review of the Xt. You can get it for around $250. I have it, and it is a great camera for point and shoot type snapshots. It is not a fully featured professional type camera, but if you just want to pull something out of your pocket and shoot a picture in the cockpit, it's great for that.

I use a Canon 300D with 75-300mm IS USM lens for nearly all of my aviation photos. The whole setup runs a bit over $1500 but for me it was well worth it and already paid for itself.

If you are looking for something small with good zoom, by far the best digital camera out there is the Olympus C770. It has 4 MP and the 10X optical zoom which is what counts. It runs about $500 but you will not regret it. If the price is a bit too steep for you then go for the 760 or the 750 which are fairly similar in terms of mega pixels and optical zoom. If you go with the 740 you will lose a megapixel as it only has 3.

The key is optical zoom, digital zoom is useless!

Ah, so you have gone fully digital. I'm not quite ready to take the plunge on that yet. I've got an N80 and I like it, and it looks like the D70 is comparable. So I think I will wait until that comes down in price a little and then go with that one.

Then I will be fully digital!
