You are the pilot of a brand new C-172SP.

You are doing your preflight preparations and your performance values look like this...

Field elevation - 1400 feet

Temperature - 3 degrees celcius

Pressure Altitude - 100 feet

Field Length - 4000 feet



Can you take off?
 
Could you live with barometric pressure like that?

Aren't altimeters unreliable below 29.00 HG. Since this is 1300 feet below field elevation, it would make the altimeter setting = 28.62. That is some extremely low pressure.

I could be way off base here.

You're on the right track...check your math though.
 
Maybe I should take math now, I don't even see where my math mistake is though, now that is sad.

1 inch for every 1000 feet, so that would be 28.92, 300 feet is .3 so that would equal 28.62. Am I missing something here?

You're on the right track still. Think about it some more though. It would be too easy if someone gave you the answer right away.


No one has said exactly why you could or couldn't fly!?

This is kind of true...but there is a specific FAR or AIM that deals with this issue.

If do too the abnormally low barometic presure, you may not be able to set the actual altimeter setting. Then the true altitude would be lower than indicated. Throw in the non standard cold temp into the mix. Low presure most likely poor weather (IFR)...inaccurate atlimeter setting = large hole in ground.

Well, I agree that the altimeter would be set at 28.62. There isn't anything in the AIM that says it isn't recommended to fly with a pressure that high. It does say that flight isn't recommended when pressure is lower than 28.00. The FARs regulate the height of the lowest flight level, which in this case would be around FL195. At first I was thinking that that's what you were getting at, but certainly that wouldn't ground you.

The only other thing is that the temperature is lower than standard for the altitude, something like 37*F, which would make your altimeter read lower than normal.
