A/C freon and sealant question

Not sure if it can be used in AC system of airplanes?

Another question is what type of freon/refrigerant and compressor oil most of heavy jets are using?

As of system, I read somewhere it's a type of turbine compressor using the ram air or bleed air?

....It makes my summer days cooler by thinking of the AC systems....thanks
 
All of the ones I have flown have NO refrigerant. They use air conditions packs that compression heat the air to high temps then cool it and then decompress it so it gets very cold. System features prevent freezing by removing the water and hopefully not getting below freezing. Warm air is added downstream to raise the temps to what is required for the demand. Most use bleed air these days.

Yeah, not on anything powered by a piston engine. All of the piston powered, air conditioned planes I've flown use a system very similar to a car.
 
Do you know what type of refregant the system use?

I know my car uses R-134a

Old stuff. 134a wasn't around back when when these airplanes were spring chickens. It's also not a matter of just different refrigerant in the system. Systems designed for R12 have different operating pressures, and the compressors are designed as such. The orifices in the condensor and other plumbing and also the expansion valve are also different. Lastly, the oils which lubricate the system are not compatible. R12 uses mineral oil and 134a uses a synthetic oil called PAG.

Probably more than you wanted to know. The Citation Mustang I mentioned I'm not sure about. It may be R134a. THe oldies are certainly R12.
