7E7 is now 787...

What was the time line of the 707 vs the DC-8? As for design, both seem to follow-ons to prop designs that had 4 engines, DC-6 and Consellation come to mind.

[/ QUOTE ]

707
First Flight = 20-December-1957
855 were delivered
(The Dash 80 was the prototype for the 707)

DC8
First Flight = 30-May-1958
Douglas built 556 DC8's
(The DC7 was the last propeller powered transport for Douglas)

[/ QUOTE ]

More 707s were built, but 707s left commercial service decades ago, while the DC-8 soldiers on. That's quite a vote for the DC-8 over the 707. But hey, the DC-8 and even the DC-3 are Boeings now too (yea right)!

This is for Brian De Jesus. Let me tell you something: The quote above shows very little respect, and a big deal of ignorance. Tell me a valid reason why he should KNOW!!
Or maybe you know everything?. I'm going to excuse you based on the fact that you are probably a kid, but let me tell you something, the more you learn in this life, the more you are aware of your own ignorance.
One more thing, being humble goes a long way, being arrogant NOT.

People need to stop getting so butthurt over the internet. And you need to realize some real aviation enthusiats come on these forums and some are bound to poke at someone who doesn't quite know things that they think are very basic. But I gaurantee you if you ever need help with an aviation related issue you will promptly get some help.

Lighten up buddy.

[/ QUOTE ]

Just because someone is a "real aviation enthusiast" with a certain level of knowledge, doesn't excuse him/her to "poke" on other "real aviation enthusiast" who knows less, even if is something basic. Making the other person feel stupid is just not right( obviously FlavorFlav didn't liked Brian de Jesus post) . There is always somebody who will know more than you, and I'm sure you wouldn't like to be "poked" when you ask or say something that the other person thinks as "basic".
To put it in another way, English it's not my first language, if somebody corrects me when I say or write something, I don't feel offended since that person is helping me to improve. But if he/she makes a comment with the intention of letting me know how knowledgeable he/she is and what a dumb $ss I am I will probably tell him/her to F&#* OFF.

[/ QUOTE ]

For real guys, I didn't mean to start a fight! I wasn't offended, and brian, I hope there arn't any hard feelings or something. I was just making sure that I wasn't going to make a full blown mistake, I mean, this place isn't anywhere even close to as bad as airliners.net forums, I can't even read those they whine so much! so peace!

It is called CONFIDENCE!

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, kind of like saying that you're going to get 200 orders for the plane and then getting 120.

Know what's funny? The 120 is very impressive. But when you swore up and down that you'd have 200, then that looks like crap.

Boeing shouldn't have shot their (marketing) mouth off like that but at the time that claim was made, the A350 wasn't a reality. Also, the complexities of the China order for the 787 took extra time to resolve and contributed to Boeing missing the mark. If my brain recalls correctly, not even the 777 had racked up as many orders as the 787 has in the equivalent amount of time since being announced. I truly feel the 787 is going to be a HUGE success for Boeing. I may even change my name to 787Fan

Actually I believe that the 777 has some 300-500 orders in total so far. Please correct me if I'm wrong it is quite the popular airplane!

MPenguin or anyone know if the 787-900 series is the size of the 767-400ER or the 767-300? Also which 787 is the transcon version and which is the international only version?

The 787 seems like it will bring us closer to SSTs. The fuselage almost looks fit for a SST already.

Seriously, so many times people have told you to think before you post.

I wasn't saying that technically it is getting closer to an SST. I meant that it looks closer to what a SST is like, as in the fuselage. Read before you post.

http://www.boeing.com/commercial/7e7/facts_sr.html
The 787-300 is the short range version
Range = 3,500 nautical miles (6,500 km)

http://www.boeing.com/commercial/7e7/facts.html
http://www.boeing.com/commercial/7e7/facts_stretch.html
The 787-800 & the 787-900 are the longe range versions

Range of the 787-900 = 8,300 nautical miles (15,400 km)
Range of the 787-800 = 8,500 nautical miles (15,700 km)

The 787-900 will carry more passengers, but, less range of the 787-800.

Both the 787-800 & the 787-900 have greater range than that of the 767-400ER (5645 nautical miles (10454 km). The 787 has the range of a 777, but, carries about the same amount of passengers as a 767.

The 787's also has as a cruise speed of Mach 0.85, while the 767 cruises at about Mach 0.80.

What is Boeing Thinking?

So they announce the name change and make a big deal about it.

And guess what I see in the Wall Street Journal today?

A huge, full page, color ad, touting the 7E7.

While the 707 is gone, the "other" Dash 80, i.e. the "missing 717", aka KC135 soldiers on. First produced in 1955, last one in 1964, in all over 800 built. Including all the variants, i.e. RC/EC/WC etc. etc.

And a lot of them are still flying. Reengined, rewinged, re this re that...but still the same old 50 year ago plane.

The joke in the Tanker Toad community is when the last model of anything is taken to the boneyard, a KC135 will come in and pick up the crew.

When you consider all the planes that have been developed, came into service and are now gone since the KC135 first showed up, the joke is probably closer to the truth!

True, but the 727 is pretty darned dead!

A real man's airplane!

We have a DC3 cargo operator that operates 3 flights a week from Long Beach to Catalina Island, a DC3 had its first flight back in 1933....

You're kidding right? I did read your post and that is why I quoted you. Again, you failed to think before you posted. I guess you never saw the prefab work and mock up of Boeing's SST. They worked on one in the past. When an SST can carry as many pax as current transports at close to the same cost as said a/c, then it will be feasible.

Now my post was not meant to be constructive criticism, but you continually fail to take to heart the knowledge people share with you. Rock on Brian.

What I meant was the amount of orders the 777 had after it was announced but before it first flew. Tony brought up the 200 order comment and I was countering by trying to explain that so far, the 787 has sold more frames since it was announced than the 777 did in the same amount of time after it was first announced.
