9-5 Ruins Lives
Heard a cool thing the other day when on SLC center going out to Eugene. Boeing was testing new 787 software/hardware on a 777 airframe. The center and the Boeing test plane had a brief discussion over the freq on how they were testing a new system designed to find possible turbulent air in advance. The test plane was trying to get to all the turbulent areas we were trying to avoid!!

Pretty cool stuff! Too bad we couldn't have had a long conversation about it.

The is a turbulence mode on a lot of current radar systems.

Yep, but something all new apparently. By his brief description it didn't sound like radar.

If it's the system that boeing has been working on for a while it is LADAR (as in light instead of radio). It's pretty much a lasar beam that measures disturbance in the air and reports it back to the computer. It some how computes how much disturbance and then shows it as turbulance. It was, when I last heard about it, severley distance limited and would only provide 30 seconds or so of warning. Hopefully they have figured out a way to enhace the range on it.
