I was just wondering guys if both crew members flying a 757 both have to be type rated. Or just the Captain has to be typed. Looking forward to some replies.

I really dont know exactly how the rating systems works, but speculating on an educated guess is that an F/O whould have a SIC rating on that aircraft, when and if he upgrades to a Captain, he would earn his PIC rating in that type of aircraft. I am not sure so if Im wrong, please tell me. Hoped that helped you abit.

Some airlines type both pilots as the checkrides for the left and right seat are about the same with a few exceptions. However, some airlines only type the left seat pilot as it is cheaper to do it that way. Netjets uses the "both pilots typed" as a selling point to their customers. USAirways types (well, when they were actually hiring) both pilots. I don't think mother delta does and I'm fairly certain Continental doesn't. Most regionals don't. All that said, the FAA is now requiring that first officers get a SIC Type rating in the aircraft they fly which is just to get around an ICAO requirment. It is type in the aircraft but it is limited to SIC privilages only. Basicly it is just paper shuffling.

I know a CO 767/757 pilot and he said both pilots are typed, and when they require extra pilots for long-haul, all 3 pilots are typed.

He usually flies international though, so I don't know if that is the same for domestic stuff.

Yes, every pilot at Continental recieves a type rating, domestic or International.

Pretty soon everyone at 121 airline will need to have at least an "SIC type rating", which is pretty much a type rating on your license with the limitation "SIC only".

Wonder when flight schools are going to begin selling those? :cwm27:

Thats what I thought.

In the US, only the captain has to be type rated. The only reason that the FO would need a type is if they fly out of the US. That is why the FAA came out with the SIC Only type rating. It is just paper shuffling and makes us compliant with the other ICAO countries.
