717 Advertisment on the Boeing 7E7 website

An excellent aircraft from an excellent company...Go Boeing

"...largest cross-section in the regional jet market." The 717's an RJ! Who knew? It'll be interesting to see how the mainline pilot groups feel about that.....

I see no point in a 717. The MD-80 and -90 can succesfuly do the job already.

The 717 is a pretty sweet plane. My favorite are the ones at Midwest Express, the interiors are aweseome. Whats the production on them right now? Is the boeing plant at LGB going to stay open? I thought there was talks of closing the doors and ending the 717 production.

Did anyone notice how annoying that music was in the ad?

To Brian: Mcdonnell-Douglas built its last model, the MD95 in 1995. When Boeing bought Mcdonnell-Douglas in 1997, Boeing continued to build the MD95's under the Boeing name and at the Now newly named Boeing plant in Long beach it was built and they called the plane the B717. Essentially the B717 or the MD95 is a DC-9-30 with bigger BMW/rolls engines and a stretched fuselage of 1.5 meters. The B717 also has a very nice updated cockpit too. The B717 is a modernized version of the MD 80's and 90's that you are talking about.

The B717 has always been marketed towards the regional type of routes. Since it holds 100 PAX or less and the range of it fits very nicely in the class. I see it more on the long haul regional type routes. They have very nice cabins and I think they fit very well in that sector. I guess they are going to try and see how they do against EMB and Airbus.

I really like boeing and the 717, but I hate to see it when companies use that type of marketing strategy where they go "look at this product, and look at ours and how its much better" If your product is really that good, people will notice. Its just like negative advertisements during the election, seems so childish.

It reminds me of a short friend of mine who introduces himself as "the world's tallest midget."

Captain Matt

The last that I heard, Boeing was going to hang in there as long as possible with keeping the 717 line open. I am going to a 717 day on Monday at Boeing, maybe they will release some rumors, who knows.

Situational awareness, Brian.

Only Doug is allowed to say that.

And I am also entittled of stating my opinion. I understand the reason he posted this and all but what Im saying is I think the MD-80 and -90 does what the 717 is supposed to do much better.

How?

It just is. If it wasn't then Delta, American, and other airlines would be using 717s. The look almost the same. Actually looks more like a streched DC-9 or something. But it does its job much better than the 717.

Why? They already have planes!!!

Brian, the 717 is about 20-30% more fuel efficient than the DC9. The 717 is in the same series as the DC9
DC9, MD81, MD82, MD83, MD87, MD88, MD90, MD90EFD, 717.

It takes more than just being a better airplane for an airline to purchase it.

Ok, thanks for letting me know they are the same plane. But if American and the other majors already have planes, why do they have MD-80s and -90s and not 717s? There has to be a reason and the MD-80 and -90 being better than the 717 could be that reason. I get it that they all pretty similar to each other. But one has to be better than the other.

Ok. My question is "If the 717 is better than the MD80 and the MD90, why is the MD80 and -90 used much more? Is it because the 717s will be replacing the MD80s and MD90s in the future?

Because they already had them!
