500 hour Riddle Grad

[ QUOTE ]

I'll probably get slammed for this but what is it with new Riddle graduates? They seem to have this entitlement mentality and that their a step above others when it comes to job offers.

You're right on target. I'm a darn Riddle grad, and it irkes me to see that same thing with this "Riddle aire of superiority" in very many of the grads; I can't figure it out either. It's like they've been programmed that way or something.

There's a reason I don't do a damn thing with alumni relations......

well i asked all of your opinions becuase my friend who goes to riddle thinks he will go out and fly for a corperate charter company after graduation without instructing

[/ QUOTE ]

Have him ask Doug about King Air flying.

I was just having a similar conversation with my instructor over the weekend... he and his buddies pretty much finished their training at the same time, he took the FBO/small school route and a couple of his friends went to bigger name flight schools.

He has been a CFI for about 5 years and just got his Gold Seal along with 5200 odd hours... he just really enjoys instructing and picking up the occasional corp. job right now and when he is ready he will be a very competative applicant. His buddies though most of them managed to get hired with regionals at minimums but in the same period of time really only have acquired between 2-3K of total time in the same period of time.

My viewpoint is why not instruct for that period of time and really build more more quality hours ?? Not saying flying at regionals/majors isn't quality time but for those looking for a break into the field shouldn't we look at it more like building experience as opposed to building time ? Not all of us will get that lucky break in the right place at the right time. We wouldn't be setting aside our dreams of that perfect aviation job... just taking a next logical step towards making ourselves more marketable.

This however is setting aside alot of the financial / personal and drudgery of instructing at times... but eitherway. .just a thought !!

So...ahh...how do you get hired at a major without any serious multi/turbine/PIC time? The regionals or a charter gig is about the only way to do that. Not many instructors do instruction in Citation's.

Cheers

Three letters:

MEI

You don't need turbine or jet to get hired by most airlines. They have just total and multi requirements.

Exceptions are Southwest, jetBlue and FedEx

Here's a reality check for your friend:

I have, right now, 486hrs Total Time & 420hrs Multi Time, my MEI and an IGI and you know how many jobs are waiting for me? ZERO. I can't even instruct (in reality) with my MEI until I've put some time in at any given school so I gotta go get my CFI-ASE and eventually my CFII if I really want to be marketable as a CFI – much less some corporate or cargo or airline pilot. That is reality.

He'll find out when he leaves Riddle that without a CFI certificate, his 500 hours, a commercial and .50 cents will buy him a Coke and that's about it.

. ACA was their top internship program, but I think that's been put on hold with the whole Independence Air gig.

[/ QUOTE ]

nah, my buddy is in charge of the program now....definitely not put on hold....

If your friend wants to "volunteer" he can get a job doing traffic watch up here. Its a super deal you work for free and they actually let you fly their crapped up old 172. Im sure hed jump at it with great eagerness. The job used to be a paid position until guys like the riddle grad wanted to bypass instructing and the owner realized he could make people do it for free. Hurry apply quickly.

A, Crashmburn, You can't get a King Air job with 500 hrs. either. Unless you're talking SIC. Just to clarify.

Yeah, and what is the percentage of people applying at the majors with zero turbine time? And the percentage getting hired? You might as well skip that college degree, get a DUI, and wreck a few airplanes, the amount of luck you'll need to get an interview will be the same...

I am a riddle Grad as of May 1st Thank God. But in response to this post I believe that there are opportunities out there other than flight instruction. I know plenty of people that have gone right into small charters, ferry flights, running mail etc. These jobs are hard to come by but they are out there. I believe it is based on who you know rather than what time is in your log book. I have found that the people with the most success are those that are active in recreational flying and getting to know the old timers at any local airport. There are plenty of them around here in Daytona; it all boils down to how much time you are willing to spend hanging around airplane hangers to start up a conversation. It is a great way to get free flight time as well. I can begin to tell you how many flights I have been on because they just want someone to go with them. I have made more contacts like this and for some of my friends it has landed them jobs.

Story of the aviation industry right there.

Networking at its finest. I wish I had the time to do this, but with the job/school/packing, I don't. That and there aren't that many old timers at KORL. If I had the time, I'd be camped at Spruce Creek.

My girlfriend lives in there so it makes it very easy especially when they are neighbors... Spruce Creek has a 7 or 8 am breakfast run every Sat morning... I have been a few times and it is great.

I got hired with zero turbine at Eagle.
