3000 flights canceled in the northeast

Our boss wanted us to get him into TEB today and try to get out tomorrow. I wanted to say, you can go if you can fly the plane yourself. He wised up last night and decided to cancel.

Well that's just a normal day in ACK. :D

Operated the flight out of BOS at 6am this morning. Winds were 30-40 degrees off the nose 25G37 with light rain. No big deal. Suppose to go back tomorrow, I'm sure it won't be cancelled.

I thought it was a bit ridiculous the amount of cancellations there were yesterday. I flew a five leg day and we pretty much felt like we had the national airspace system to ourselves.

Very rarely do you have to use the "are you guys still here?" call between JFK and IAD.

Can someone explain to me the logic of cancelling flights that far in advance? Seems to me that the airlines just create more problems for themselves downstream.. more pax to be re-booked, crews/aircraft to be shuffled around, etc..

Customer service? :)

Best to not wait until the last minute if you're going to just cancel anyway.

Perhaps I should have stated that better. I was wondering about the logic of cancelling Friday/Saturday flights when the weather hasn't moved in yet. I seem to remember with Hurricane Katrina they were running departures out of MSY until the last possible second.

Risk. Get the aircrafts out of the area before any kind of damage can be done to them. Airlines air not required to pay for hotels for cancelled flights due to nature.

My flight out of JFK left pretty much on time yesterday. There was a huge line of planes waiting to get out. They had them lined up down one of the runways (22L, maybe?) and then up the taxiway. We seemed to keep moving though.

I dunno, sitting on my couch drinking was pretty fun. Even after the cable went out. Still had internet and power.

Yeah, the eye of the storm rolled right over my city. We do have some light wind damage (shingles, mostly) and a bit of low-land flooding, but I've seen worse. Power flickered a bit, but stayed on.
