2nd Solo

Pilot and A Half (for now
I went for my 2nd solo this weekend. I hadn't flown since my first solo a month ago. I ended up having to go with the CP because my instructor was busy. Since the field I fly out of is uncontrolled, I went to KEVB to get the 3 landings at a controlled field. The winds weren't bad when we left, but they picked up at some point. We did a few landings together and I got used to right traffic (I don't know why it was so hard at first- guess I just wasn't used to it), then he went to get up. When he called the tower to ask if he could get out they asked if he was sure he wanted to solo a student. It turns out the winds had picked up to 15G21kts. We discussed it and decided it would be okay since we had just done several landings together without a problem. He got out and I took off. The first time, I wasn't 100% sure I was on the runway because the taxiway kept going past the runway and there was not a number at that point, so I checked with the tower. I did my 3 landings and picked my instructor back up. We tried to get breakfast at Spruce Creek, but they didn't have power. :( Now, I just have the solo XCs to do. :)

Good job! Cross wind landings aren't anything special, the correction is just a little bigger than from a light x-wind. I landed a 172 in a 22kt crosswind at KTPA last week - it isn't an impossible feat.

The solo X/C's are probably the most fun you will ever have in an airplane, you will never forget them.

It really wasn't much of a crosswind. I think it was from 180 on runway 20. I wouldn't have guessed the winds were 15kts if the tower hadn't told us. I think I will be going down to MLB. I hope they are more friendly than the last 2 times I went there. The controller at KEVB was very pleasant and understanding. :)

Just be careful about being #2 behind a 40kt helicopter on a 10 mile final... Happened to me twice this year. MLB is a good field - plenty of students from FIT there.
