A pilot is dead after his small plane crashes near the McClellan Palomar airport early this morning. The Beechcraft Bonanza went down just after 7:00 a.m. a couple of miles east of the airport near the intersection of El Fuerte and Bressi Ranch Way in Carlsbad. The FAA says the pilot declared a missed approach and turned around to make another landing attempt. The plane hit the hillside and burst into flames, killing the pilot. A spokesperson for the National Transportation And Safety Board (NTSB) says there was one quarter mile visability in the fog. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

man, rip to the pilot, I wonder what went wrong and which approach was he attempting.

Not sure how to read the approach chart but did he go below minimums? Not much room for error in:

On the first attempt, he went missed, so I'm sure he didn't go below, but than went around for a second and final attempt, well.... lets just say he went well below mins.
I really dont understand why anyone would try to attempt a second landing in that kind of wx. Me personally, I wouldn't even of gotten close to that airport, I would of immediately diverted inland somewhere. Ramona airport is about 20nm away and well inland.

Who knows what happened, what really went wrong but god bless him and his fam.

RIP. I fly out of CRQ every week and we have fog almost every morning during this time of the year...

Those aren't the mins. They are notam'd higher. 593' if memory serves. Not too low, but like someone else posted, not a problem to find another airport, most likely VMC too. Lots of coastal fog in the morning, but opens up east.

My thoughts and prayers are go out to his family.

Here is a picture I took on Saturday of 24 at KCRQ.

For being IFR and on the missed, he was really close to the airfield. I've done the ILS 24 many times and I never remember SoCal Tracon bringing anyone that close to the airfield, unless they've changed the way the do things in the past year. I've ususally done the published missed which is fly heading 245, climb to 3,000 ft, then intercept the R-145 to OCN Vortac then get vectored back to intercept the ILS 24. This guy shouldn't have event tried getting in there, especially with the weather being forcasted below minimums for the approach. Even if he was on the approach he shouldn't have been that off course with barely any winds.

I've done all my approaches in VMC and TRACON vectors the missed, turn to 180 and climb. The hill in question would be further east than south at that point.
