2020 DX Outlook With Coronavirus

I hope this is not a stupid question but will this also affect cargo operators?

No. Cargo always gets a cut-out. The Corona Cargo cut out...

I just got my cardboard "30 year" plaque from my shop. The only time we furloughed was during the last recession and it was nothing more than the company making a statement. Totally unnecessary as the pilot group was willing to take voluntary LOA's to save the furlough. Anyhow, cargo never stopped going to China, so there's that.

I heard today that delta just announced a 15% reduction in flying- volunteer leave and a hiring freeze.

It’s hard to be optimistic about what’s about to come. Even before this virus a lot of economist were predicting a recession starting sometime in late 2020 or 2021. This virus is def making it look like 2020. The only good thing is dispatch groups are relatively small and airlines have a lot of fat they can trim before they get to us.

Yes this is the beginning of the long anticipated economic downturn but add on top of that the fear to fly. This is going to be severely worse than 2008.
Even if the hysteria only lasts 2 more months that is long enough to bankrupt every airline besides DL and WN. 2 months of empty planes is catastrophic.

“United town hall with the ceo right now. 70% reductions in flying over the next several months. 9/11 was 40%”

President and CEO foregoing their salary until June. This per somebody who flies for them

Seems most (all?) major airline players have a hiring freeze currently. I'm in a new hire class starting April which by some miracle is still happening on time. But I wonder if this will put a stop to future classes for the foreseeable future.

Well... they just shut down flying to/from Europe... even for cargo carriers

strap in everyone its about to get interesting

Just read the DHS guidelines and apparently it only applies to European nationals from those countries while American nationals are free to still travel I am assuming after they have gone through a screening. Have also read that Trump walked back his statement about cargo and that it can still fly, so it’s not as draconian as it first appeared.

That’s what I thought he was saying, am at work and couldn’t hear everything over other people’s comments.

Without spreading fear, would love to hear the temperature on the short-term and long-term outlook for Coronavirus. Unpaid leave, furlough, hiring freezes, delayed classes etc. Obviously this is a rapidly evolving situation with the airlines that people are trying to sort out.
You may have a Purple Heart, Space Shuttle and Firefighting Time... at the end of bad day, all the airlines care about is your date of hire.

Can somebody get him a rattle or something and let the adults do their job?

Banning Europeans from entering doesn’t do anything to stop the virus if we can still come in contact with them/it when over there. How about an actual legitimate medical and scientific response?
