I remember reading this post cert-less last year (lol). Seems like every week I logged onto JC there was another opening somewhere that I was unable to take advantage of. Hoping for the same thing this year (fingers crossed)! Would anyone have any knowledge on if their shops are currently hiring or plan to have an opening within the coming weeks?

Also not sure if someone here can shed some light on this but the Swiss Satellite office in JFK has dispatchers but I don't know anybody that works in the office or for the company. Would the dispatch openings be posted on the Swiss/Lufthansa website?

Well I think Frenchie is fresh out of school, so regionals would be more realistic.

I know I’ve seen several regionals hiring lately.

And no, those jobs are employed by Swissport, not the airline, so it would only be on Swissport’s site.

I am fresh out of school so I've been applying to all regional and supplemental openings I've seen ... not sure if WN would even look my way but I'd definitely send an application their way once it becomes available :).
 
Hello Frenchie,

Though it's not the most high paying regional, TransStates is currently hiring and the cost of living in St Louis makes the low regional pay manageable.

I know Compass is as well. And I’m sure more will be shortly since people are just getting all clears for WN and their official offers.

There is a chance that it is Swiss Air. I have heard that DL has people that are certified in Japan that while they do not do the actual release, they help to ensure it is all coordinated on that side, speak the language, double check all the NOTAM's and so on.

Similarly I have seen posts about an office in California for major Asian airlines.

Those “dispatcher” positions for the foreign carriers at airports are not actual Flight Dispatch positions and your experience there is not going to translate to big offers down the road. Go to those positions with caution. You are much better served trying to get on at any regional over those swissport positions.

China I would understand but Japan is super easy to plan in and out of. There’s not even issues really with slots like in other places or permit required routes.

I agree anyone is better served in a regional but I do know several people who started at foreign carriers. There’s still some good experience to be had there. I wouldn’t plan on doing two years and then off to a major but if it’s what you have to do to get the ball rolling in dispatch it’ll be fine. Just keep looking to the horizon for that next opportunity.

As in dispatch for a foreign carrier in the US and then transfer to a foreign country and dispatch there?

Yes I’m sure there is but, it’ll be insanely difficult unless you have dual citizenship. Immigration requires sponsorship in many countries and if you don’t know anyone (Usually it’s close family) the company has to do it, or both. When the company does it, frequently the countries charge more for it, decreasing your odds.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up, also dispatchers here have different roles than overseas. We have more control of each flight, I have heard Air France recently reduced the flights they plan to around 200 per dispatcher. Which means then have the computer send the release and then if the Captain has an issue he calls dispatch and they sort it out. That’s not what I personally would want to do, but that’s me based on probably third-hand knowledge.

I’ll put it this way: in my opinion, unless you’re a dual citizen, everyone by far has better odds of getting on at a major than working in a foreign dispatch office, and there are plenty of dispatchers who never make the majors.
 
I was just curious. I know some airlines have a position similar to ours and was wondering if it was a viable way to get into it. I'm already at a place that I'm not going to leave, but I just wanted to know if anyone had a good idea.
 
I'm at a current major and failed to pass the dispatch process 2x now :( [been here for 8 years]; but, I just received an offer at a regional =O ... don't know what to do.

Thats a tough situation. If you like the regional/location, just take the regional. It really isn't THAT bad at a regional and most of my friends and I really enjoyed our time at regionals. Its usually only about 2 years until you move on anyway. Could be waiting longer than that if you stay where you are and hope for internal hire.
 
On the other hand, most majors have a longevity bonus and internals are at the front of your class. No guarantee that you will move on from a regional also. I guess the question you need to ask is is it worth giving up progress at your current airline to become a dispatcher somewhere.
 
Also, if you stay where you are, that’s probably the only mainline shop that will consider you. If you go to a regional, the dispatch experience, combined with the other operational experience will give you a leg up over many others who went into dispatch with no operational experience, which is a lot judging by my shop.
