Here pretty soon we won't even be able to travel to Cuba anymore - my hopes for deep space travel died when we elected a guy who doesn't even acknowledge climate change.

I've heard you can get a prostitute for 24 hours for two rolls of our luxury toilet paper in Cuba. Not sure I want to visit, seems kind of spendy.

Ironically deep space travel is probably the most important thing we could invest in as a civilization, given how crummily we're treating the environment

I was there in December - clean and safe. Or at least compared to the DR where I was the week before.

Clean and safe, from what I've been told that's true. Everyone is dirt poor and still live in a dictatorship, they certainly wouldn't rock the boat would they?

Agreed - they are largely poor. That being said, they have far better access to healthcare than we do, and a far lesser probability of being the victim of a violent crime.

There's the dictators that appoint themselves, and the dictators you elect.

There's an old tale about investing into global warming observation

Tamerlane was looking for someone to teach his donkey to talk. Nobody wanted the job. Finally the wise men of the dunes - Hodja Nasreddin took the position and promised to teach the donkey to talk in 10 years time.
- Are you crazy? his friends asked him.
- Not really, Hodja answered, the money is good the job is not hard and in 10 years a lot might happen: I might die, or Tamerlane might die or surely enough this old donkey might die.
