2009 SAMA Conference & Career Fair

Do airlines still have internships these days? Are there still Juniors/Seniors doing these? It might not be a bad idea to try and snag one.

Just got a new one and cant wait to impress these airline representatives. :sarcasm:

FWIW, a handful of friends and I applied and interviewed at the career fair last year. We were all hired.

Hopefully the list of participating companies will grow. If you are looking for a job or internship, do not pass up this opportunity.

you know, they were all cheerleading about internships when i was there and so i asked the question "so uh, what about us who pay for school ourselves and can't afford to not have a **PAYING JOB** for 6 months?"

guess internships are only for the rich kids and silver spoon types...

Its a pretty good opportunity if you can land an internship with a Major. Even if it isnt a paid internship, its a great opportunity for the future.

Thats true. But it does if you eventually work for the mothership instead of her contract carriers at half price.

You know damn well that that won't work without having wealthy parents to pay the bills while going to school and completing the internship.

Internships go both ways. If someone doesn't know they are an idiot they find out when they don't get their guaranteed interview.

I know plenty of people who did the United and ACA internships back in the day whose parents are anything but wealthy. AFAIK, all of these guys made great contacts throughout the industry because of these internships.

Just because you don't have what it takes to make it through a period of time unpaid does not mean that those that do automatically have wealthy parents.

ps

All of those guys that did the internships finished all of their flight courses on time and graduated late only by the time they were gone for the internship(s).

Not all internships go unpaid as well. One of my friends did an internship with Lockheed-Martin at a Flight Service Station and received about $20/hr for sitting around and reviewing flight briefing tapes. He still keeps in contact with his former boss and keeps that as his backup plan if flying doesn't materialize in the future.

There are paid internships out there, you just have to look besides the Student services job page. I did a paid internship over the summer while at UND. I didn't get it through UND, I went out on my own and looked for one. It was a great experience and gave me my first experience in 121 operations. I learned a lot and made a lot of contacts. Also, every single job interview I've had so far I was asked about my internship experience. And to show you how small the aviation world really is, I recently had an interview with a 121 airline (which I got through networking!) we were introduced to some of the management staff and I recognized the Director of Flight Operations right away, as he used to be the Chief Pilot back when I was an intern at this company. It definitely helped me that day knowing the Director of Ops, even though I didn't get the job! The point is, the SAMA conference will allow you to make many contacts and possibliy get you a job/internship!

huh?

isnt getting the job the objective?

Yes! What I was trying to say, it helped me during the actual interview that I knew the guy, because I worked with him previously when I was an intern when they went over my resume. But in the end they only had 5 spots to fill, and everyone they hired had time in type.
