Brian,

It's true ANG units love to promote from within ... but don't enlist only because you think it will make your UPT package look better. If that's the case, just apply as a civilian.

If you enlist, do it because you want to serve the U.S.A and would not have a problem answering the call to serve overseas in places you would rather not be.

Any unit, and mine is no exception ... will get a few who joined for college and thinks college comes first. We had a commander who I thought put it quite elloquently ...

"We're giving you a paycheck, and paying for college, so if anyone ought to come first, it's your employer who you signed with on the dotted line ...."
 
In WWII they were in a shortage of pilots and now its completely different.

Rated slots are going left and right for OTS ... that and technical fields. The majority of ANG units still hold selection boards each year.


... as a sidenote, I have been told that the need for AF pilots is cyclical with the stability of the airline industry.

classy post. question other people's strive to serve is a questionable trait for me personally. you also have no regard, nor idea of the guard world and thus are not qualified to make blanket statements. it reminds me of bootcamp when my dorm chief informed me that you don't have to actually salute guard officers!

in guard, your military career is equally important as your school and or job. i say this from a position of six years service and from a family of guard service since 1947. and you?
 
When I interviewed with my unit for a pilot slot, they asked me about my grades, etc...I had a 3.4 at the time and they were curious about two classes I had withdrawn from when I first started. The funny thing is, those were my first two classes and the reason I withdrew was because I deployed for Iraqi Freedom, with the very people who were interviewing me. I retook the classes and got an A and a B in them and that was clearly on the transcripts, but they were still curious about it. I think they wanted to see if I had thought out my options before I withdrew (ie, they don't want to send a quitter to UPT.

i am screwed. there is also a rumor of one of our captains having a 2.5 music major, and he is actually a good pilot and officer by all acounts. at least i have some awesome rec letters.

I had a 2.4 GPA from ERAU, and got into OTS. Mine hinged on my interview with the officer recruiter, IMO.

Service before self......one of the 3 USAF Core Values which make me laugh, since the senior leadership spout and tout it, but rarely if ever follow it themselves. Another "do as I say, not as I do" trait of the USAF.
