1st Class AMEs

I recently had the experience of going to an AME in my town for a 1st class cert. I filled out all the paperwork (including the box for 1st class) and the nurse did her thing.

When the doc came in to do his thing, he asked if I was getting a 2nd or 3rd class cert? I said I was here for a 1st class. Turns out he doesn't do 1st class, only 2nd and 3rd

. Not a big deal for me. The doctor and his nurse were a lot of fun and I actually hung around a while chatting with them. They were super helpful otherwise, and they handed me my check back

.

And, yes, I asked when I called to make the appointment in the first place, "How much does a 1st class medical exam cost? Maybe she just thought by 1st class I meant top quality

I'm under 35 years old, so I didn't really know of any reason he couldn't do a 1st class (you know, no ECG or anything like that). Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Your age didn't have anything to do with whether or not he could give you a Class I medical. I don't know all of what goes into it, but there are likely varying levels of training (and most likely cost since it's a govt agency) required to be an AME. So to make a long story short, 99% chance the doc just wasn't certified to give Class I medicals.

Hope that helped

when I went to get my first class, everything went fine, and then the receptionist lady hands me the certificate, as I was leaving the office I looked at it, and of course it says "FAA 3rd Class Medical Certificate"

I think I went as white as a ghost, so then I went back to the receptionist lady. It turns out that she had just printed it out wrong, so she whited it out, and re did it for me.

You're probably right about him just not being certified for 1st class. Probably not much market for it around here in western KY. He said he does 14 or 15 3rd class certs a month, but I was the only one ever to request a 1st from him.

About the age thing. I just meant that after age 35, you have to have an ECG and I thought maybe since the doc didn't have that equipment, he wouldn't be able to give the exam.

Thanks for the info!

There are two classifications for AME's. Only Senior AME's are authorized to do 1st class medicals.
