Well I would never have had the maturity, either as a teenager or probably in the many years since, for such a flight.
Just because you don't need much in the way of navigation skills any longer doesn't make it easy. Not that long ago the main accomplishment would have been successful navigation while also flying the plane. Finding Pago Pago or any small island was an incredible feat, many Air Force crews perished because they couldn't find Australia!
The feat here is the initiative and the organization and taking the action to get it done. You had plenty of assistance but you went out and found the airplane and found the people who could assist and after you got the team together you are the one who did it.
I suppose for the most part flying airplanes is generally easy, its only when things go wrong that you find out how good you are. Flying across the Pacific there is plenty of opportunity to go wrong, ask Ray Clamback or anyone else who does single engine trans Pacific flights.
Matt, you can be confident that those who are most willing to dismiss the significance of your accomplishment have a comparatively modest record of achievements and don't have their name in the record books or their own Wikipedia entry.
