182 Audio Intercom Issue

Been flying a 182G for a bit. It doesnt have PTT on the yoke, so we use the velcro ones that plug into mic jack for the headset, then the headset plugs into the PTT.

Heres the issue: When the headset is plugged directly into the plane, the intercom to talk with other people in the plane works fine, but obviously now you cant talk on the radio.

When plugged into the PTT-Headphone plug is plugged directly into plane and mic is routed through PTT as described above, the intercom doesnt work. Its not a squelch issue. You talk, and the mic doesnt "pick up" the voice, therefore no one can hear you. When you press the PTT button, everything works fine and you can now talk on the radio.

We bought new PTT switches, and that doesnt seem to be the issue. Everyone I've talked to so far is stumped, any suggestions?

This is a known issue with those mic switches. You have to re-wire the switch internally to make it work. Basically the plugin PTT doesn't pass mic audio unless it is pressed, so it has a 2 pole switch internally. One pole grounds to activate the PTT feature, one closes the circuit for mic audio. Basically what you do is open up the switch and jumper the side that turns the mic audio on and off. I'll see if I can dig up instructions for the mod, at least one intercom company has them online.

Took it apart, and it doesnt seem to be a Telex, or David Clark. It didnt come apart very easily, in fact I had to break the plastic. Heres what the wiring looks like, im stumped. Thinking about going to the airport to buy a Telex. Anyone know how this one might work?
