172S vs 172SP - what\'s the difference?

I have an S poh but I need to get checked out in an SP... so what's the difference???

Re: 172S vs 172SP - what\'s the difference?

I've flown both, but I've seen no difference other than some aesthetics. The C172S has a slightly different interior than the SP (seats, door liners, etc.), and the headset jacks are located in a different place. The 172S I flew had a KLN89B GPS, while the SP had a KLN94 (though I'm sure there are plenty of S models with a 94). Performance figures are no different from what I've seen, and they both handle the same. If you have a 172S POH and you want to fly an SP, there should be no problem at all.

Re: 172S vs 172SP - what\'s the difference?

the P in SP is a marketing tactic to make people buy a Cessna 172 with leather seats, dual axis autopilot and a 6" MFD. That and the actual S model 172 was only made available to flight schools. If you ever see a Riddle 172 up next an 03 or 04 Cessna, minus the fancy stuff, the 172 S has skylights...oh...even though the airworthiness certificate says 172S.

Then again when it comes time to buy a new airplane since we're a Cessna Pilot Center, our 2005 172 (Assuming Bendix-King gets out of litigation with Cessna) could have a Garmin 1000 in it. Now that would cause a forward CG...

Ed Ed Ed........nch nch nch............I'd expect more of you now that your a master CFI at Lenair! An SP has a letter P in it and the S model doesn't!!!!!!

the 172 S has skylights...

I think that is an option Riddle buys, when I was there all the 172's had skylights (C-172M, C-172N, C-172P, C-172Q)

Re: 172S vs 172SP - what\'s the difference?

the purpose of the skylights in the embry riddle planes are to have the students occasionally glance out of them to see how high the CB clouds tower above and behind them.

Not quite. Dispatch is more tough on students when it comes to convective weather. They are for traffic avoidence.

Riddle's C172S' have the 180hp conversion engine on the aircraft at the DAB campus, unsure about Prescott's.

We're at 5000', so you betcha.

I thought the C172S came standard with 180 ponies anyways?

Re: 172S vs 172SP - what\'s the difference?

I've never seen a Cessna dealership with a purely C172S model, but the background on the skylights may be the reason that Cessna reopened the 172 line to begin with which is an interesting story. Anyone else ever seen a C172S without the SP upgrades?

I think the smoothest move Cessna ever made was developing the 172 as a 180hp aircraft. The IO-360 is the most common and probably most reliable engine out there and it sure does a lot better than the 160hp N model that I also fly up here in Prescott.

Become an arborist and examine tree tops. Fly a 160hp 172 out of Prescott on a 100 degree day!

Or a rickety old C172M with 150hp. *cough*Skyschool*cough*

Wait...did I just say that out loud?

Geeze, I didn't know you were at Lenair Ed! I knew Mrivc was over there at Royal Aviation, but now two around here...should I even ask which is better, or who can get me discounts?

Yeah well Omar at least knew the difference between the SP and the S so you should probably go over there
