The new "ATP" rule may likely be the best thing that has ever happened to the supply of pilots in a long time, despite the hardships that many low-timers like myself are facing. Hopefully we'll see things become as bad as some of the forecasts foretell; I won't shed a tear if one day the regionals can't find anyone else to man their aircraft.
Unfortunately I think with this rule airlines in the states will deal with it by hiring the way Asian and European carriers do ie ab initio style academies. If that happens it'll be a real shame as I see the diversity of flying backgrounds of the pilots at carriers in the states to be a great thing. I am with you with not shedding a tear if they end up short of qualified employees.
