1475TT 350TW 600 AK Looking for Work

Any news?

Yeah I visited Talkeetna a few days ago and talked with operators there. Hoping to work with K2 Aviation next season. Chatted with the CP, owner and some other folks. Seems like a very well run operation and the planes are in incredible shape. Got to go along for a tour in the right seat of the Beaver. Way fun. Lots of history to learn about being a tour guide though.

So in the meantime to prep for that, looking to fly Wacos doing air tours in Florida. Went up in a Stearman yesterday to get an idea of it, that was awesome. Probably going to take a trip to Florida soon to check out the operation etc.

There's a 310 at Inflight Pilot Training here in the Twin Cities metro that is decently priced and well maintained if you're willing to travel. PM me if you want more info

Pay?/QOL?
Commutable?
Best place to send a res?
Our Anchorage base is probably not easily commutable. But our PDX base is. The pay and qol is decent. There is a lot of flying up here. The pdx baee is slowly expanding. First year pay $30 hr with $50 per diem for each overnight. An atp is required. We do hire low time guys for the freighter but it isn't really commutable.

Oooo... no ATP.... just under FAR 135.243(c) IFR PIC mins, though... so I guess no commutable positions unless you have an ATP, huh?

Get your 135 mins. The world is pretty open from that point. Fedex feeders have all lowered to 135 mins.

PenAir will tell you they'll look at you for the freighter with around 750+ hours. Funny story, I actually moved up to Alaska because their chief pilot told me he had a spot for me in their next ground school. I quit my job in the lower 48, loaded up my SUV and moved to Anchorage. I walked into his office a few days later and the story had changed. Now I was looking at a spot in the next ground school, but I was "number 1 on the list of applicants". Okay, no big deal. I can wait an extra month. A few weeks later they were "waiting on some guys to move over to the 121 side." Okay, fair enough. I'll just have to wait my turn. A couple of weeks later they were "looking to buy a third freighter before they took on more 135 FOs." That's when I started looking at other Anchorage based operations. I ended up in a ground school for another company with 6 other guys, 4 of whom had the SAME EXACT STORY I did with PenAir. Apparently PenAir has a bit of a reputation for keeping people on the hook for when they get desperate. Maybe things have changed since then. Who knows. YMMV.

It is unfortunate that this still happens. :( They still take freighter guys, but they like them closer to ATP mins. But it makes no sense to me. I would rather take someone with 750tt and get some work out of them.

Meh, it all worked out for the best in the end. The move I made ended up being the perfect stepping stone for my goals. I've heard some other stories from former PenAir pilots that made me feel like I dodged a bullet. But I've also met some guys who were quite happy there. All a matter of perspective, I suppose.

Yep. I personally have no complaints, but some people do have valid complaints. Glad it ended up working for you.
