14 CFR 135 rest rules discussion

Re: Cessna 421 ambulance and charter

As far as I know there has never been reduced rest under 135 (non sched). 135.267 is the reg. The only thing I see there is additional rest if you over fly your 10 or 8 hours (crew makeup dependant).

:dontknow:

edit

Scheduled ops has it, similiar to 121 reduced rest. 135.265. I have never operated under 135 scheduled ops.

Interesting. We were unscheduled technically, but the ops manual was written with scheduled ops rules, though they told us they could negate that and use unscheduled rules if it benefited them.

Though I never saw that happen, anytime somebody hit reduced rest they pushed back their show the next day.

Re: Cessna 421 ambulance and charter

Just to be clear, I think it's a good thing if this happens at Amflight, and I DO think it should be changed.

So its a bad thing that AMF puts their pilots in a hotel for 6-8 hours a day at the layover then makes them fly back in the evenings? I dunno... its tiring being away from home for 12 hours a day, but if the pilots rest during the layover, I dont see what the problem is.

My guess is that if this is changed, companies such as AMF and pretty much all the other 135 freight outfits would simply extend the layover so the pilots would get thier required rest at the hotel instead of at home. NOT a good thing!

If I remember my reg reading correctly (no far/aim with me right now to double check), 135.261 allows unscheduled operators to comply with scheduled rest rules if they desire. It allows them to have get that extra hour of "reduced rest" out of you if they need it. Scheduled operations in Alaska don't have to comply with 135.265, and can instead use .267 (that's what most companies do).

There are already runs where this happens, and it's not so much of a bad thing.

The thing that sucks is when you don't have enough time to get 8 hours of sleep at the layover, and you don't have enough time to get 8 hours of sleep at home. It turns guys into zombies.

Re: Cessna 421 ambulance and charter

ppragman's got it.

135.261 allows for it

(2) Any other operation under this part, if the operator elects to comply with §135.265 and obtains an appropriate operations specification amendment.
