There was poop on the seat.
It occured to me the other day. I have 40 years of this career left, if I'm lucky. Sometime in that 40 years I'm bound to have a "poop emergency" in flight. It's just statistics.

Poop is everywhere. Washing your hands just makes you feel better about it. As soon as you finish cutting a turd, you touch your pants and belt, put away your phone...then you wash your hands...(you don't wash anything else) so you're telling me that you're simply just gonna avoid touching your pants/belt/phone etc. between hand washing and the remaining half life of poop germs? Poop particles are real.

Hahahaha you just reminded me of one of my first flight from MTY to LAX. I don't know whether it was the water, the weird mexican coffee from the hotel breakfast, or the chilaques(sp?), but there we were a mere hour into the nearly 4 hr flight when sweat started beading off my brow. Things were hastily arranged... It was hilarious and terrible simultaneously. No comment was made by the rest of the crew but THEY KNEW. They had to know...I destroyed that thing. I have at best ~34.2 career years left, so hopefully that was the one and only time.

To the OP: Aside from the other great tips posted in this thread, I find neti pots to be really helpful with keeping your sinuses irrigated which increases your defense to all this crud. You get really dry sinuses thanks to cabin pressurizaton and dehydration, and it makes you more susceptible. They are a pain to pack tho.. So I usually just try and use this stuff. http://www.xlear.com/xlear-sinus-care/xylitol-products/adults/natural-nasal-spray/
You can buy it on amazon or at whole foods. It's cheap.

Hydration, nutrition and exercise will be your best defense. It's a very dry environment and your sinuses will get inflamed, making them a good place for viruses to stick. Drink as much water as you can stand. Also, carry a small bottle of saline nose spray and use it once every flight.

It's tough to eat well on the road, but limit your intake to whole foods. I personally skip meals until I can find a decent meal. Junk food won't help you fend off the funk.

As far as exercise, just walk at very minimum. You have to get blood flowing in order to help the body fight off everything you're exposed to.

You're definitely not alone, but you'll get used to it eventually

Back when I was airlining 4+ times a month, I would get sick every few months. Since changing jobs, I've been sick once, and that was just a few weeks into the new job.

Alcohol wipes are comically ineffective against most bacteria & viruses...more so against fungi & protists.

You need something with perisistance to make any real dent in the microbial count. Hand wipes don't come close.

70/30 mix of propanol/water is about as good as you can do with alcohol. TSA might have a question when you bring your squirt bottle through the checkpoint.

Vicks used to make some foaming hand stuff that was AWESOME. Killed everything except spores and was persistent over at least 12 hours.

But people got weirded out because it had STUFF in it. GASP!

Absent that, same rules apply as when I was a kid. Wash your hands, don't put your hands on your face. Duh.

Ever hear about the guy at our former employer who got some on the back of his tie? Took him and the FO awhile to figure it out I guess...barf

This one time at band camp....

Knew a guy who got barfed on in a BE-99. High pressure, high volume industrial waste chunky salsa. Was all over th the panel and the inside of his sunglasses.

He had something legit to complain about. Took more than a few sani-coms to clean up.
