Position Description

Boeing UK is now recruiting for 12 month undergraduate interns to join the business next Summer 2014. These roles are open to applications from Undergraduate students who are seeking a 12 month sandwich year placement to meet the requirements of their course.

In the UK, we employ more than 1,300 people across numerous sites and the company is experiencing solid organic growth. Our longstanding strategic relationship with the UK aerospace industry, Armed Forces and commercial aviation sector dates back more than 70 years. Today, the UK remains a critically important market, supplier base and a source of some of the worlds most inventive technology partners. By completing your internship at Boeing you will join one of the most diverse, talented workforces anywhere in the world.

This role will focus mainly on supporting our Flight Training Dept, which is responsible for training pilots and first officers in commercial jet flying on various types such as our new 787. We have a variety of simulators on site to ensure effective and safe training for these pilots. The role will also spend some time working with other parts of the Flight Services business in Crawley, in order to experience how the team works as a whole to deliver world class customer training. These other areas include Simulator Engineering and Operations, Finance, Sales, HR, IT and Facilities.

Working closely with the Flight Training team, the successful candidate will experience firsthand what goes into training pilots, from course development and the complex logistics of course arrangement through to course delivery and student exams. Understanding the numerous pressures and factors to take into consideration, such as regulatory requirements, customer desires and business realities, will give the Intern a very practical business experience, and will help develop their decision making, resource management, leadership and team working abilities.

The Intern will spend time with the different staff members in the Dept, in order to see the process pieces and understand how they come together to form the final product. Daily tasks will range from administrative support to observing flight training sessions, shadowing Instructors or representing the Dept in weekly or monthly meetings with the rest of the Campus.

The role will support projects in the area which could be along the themes of, Communication, how can we improve the speed and quality of learning in a diverse and multicultural environment; or how we can communicate better across a multifunctional and geographically diverse organisation. Improving the design and presentation of multi-media courseware using up to date technology. We are also interested to hear what projects or themes the successful candidate would like to apply to our business and welcome such input. The role will have access to our Instructor Pilots and simulators so gives a unique environment for the successful candidate to bring relevant theory to the workplace to test hypotheses and assumptions.

We are a global company and work closely with Seattle, so there is a chance of meetings running outside of core office hours, but this is not anticipated to be a regular event for this role.

Competencies

As our customers are on site, the candidate will need to comply with our office dress code of smart casual/professional, and be presentable and ready to stand with the rest of the team to help them out if required. Courtesy is a must!

Competencies
Be enthusiastic to work across the business, and be ready to spend their time in a busy, multicultural environment

Competencies
The candidate should be a good communicator and be ready to work with disparate people across the business, of varying seniority.

Competencies
The regulatory background we work in is complex, so the candidate should have good attention to detail

Competencies
Versatility and flexibility are key, as priorities change swiftly in this Dept, due to customer requirements and emergent issues.

Basic Qualifications For Consideration

No security clearance required. As per usual Boeing ITAR requirements for all positions, some nationalities will be unable to be hired due to the sensitive commercial information we handle which cannot, by law, be exported.

Typical Education/Experience

Whilst this role is predominantly in the Flight Training arena, the skills acquired through the placement will be universally valuable throughout any commercial enterprise.

We anticipate this placement to interest those with a passion for aviation and aerospace, particularly on the commercial side. No specific qualifications or fields of study are required. It may interest MSc students with a mind to working within aviation, given the access to our training environment.

Given the example projects suggested, a background or interest in Communication, or IT would be appropriate. However, we are flexible and will be interested to hear from candidates from various backgrounds as to what they might make of this opportunity, depending on where their interests lay.
