So what about the logbook implications of all this? Assuming the guy logged the 0.2, if you pay him back for the time will he have to go back and take them out of his logbook? If you don't inform him, is his logbook fraudulent? i.e. logging time he paid for, but didn't fly? Where's the line? What if you want to pay for (but not fly) 0.3 hrs? 0.8? 1.8? 8.8?

One thing I remember my old man telling me while I was growing up......."Do the right thing".

It took me doing a few wrong things before I found out doing the right thing was easier

I just looked at the school's schedule online, and it looks like this student who got jipped will be flying right after me. Unless my instructor already told him about all of this, I am going to let him know what happened and repay him the $13 or so that he accidently paid for.

I just figure if i made that mistake, I'd like someone to do the same.

As for the logbook question, I'm sure my instructor will make him change his amount of flight time.

What you put in your logbook has nothing to do with what you're billed.

Good point. And although they're interrelated (and both important to make right), it seems to me at the end of the day the 'logbook fraud' issue is actually more important to straighten out than 'who paid for it' issue -- so no matter what happens with the money, now that everyone is aware (CFI included), then all parties should adjust their logbooks to reflect the actual flying that THEY actually did (whether they paid for it or not).
