12 free minutes of flying today!!

My instructor got me the keys, and I had just sat in the plane getting ready to start the preflight. First thing I did was record the tach and hobbs in/out times. To my suprise, the student who last flew the plane recorded the hobbs time incorrectly, giving me 12 free minutes.

I went into my instructors office telling him about the problem and he basically said that it was the prior student's problem since he misrecorded the times on the clipboard. Well, either way it was a good reminder to me to check, double check, and check again the hobbs prior to firing up the aircraft.

I'm having a real hard time reading your post. Seems as there's the words "free" and "plane" in the same sentence. Stop posting jibberish.

Do the right thing and set it straight. You may make a mistake down the line and could only hope that others would do the same.

You mean I should pay him (whoever it is) back?

I wouldn't loose sleep over it. Things like this happen, it was only 12 mins which equals what like $10-$13 depending on your location, wait, it wasn't a G-V that this happened in ???

then you could add some zeros onto that figure.

Even then it would be o.k. because if you can afford a GV then you could afford to lose that amount too . . . right?

I think that JEP has the right idea.

This is the same dilemma as the free candy from the machine, (see earlier thread Lavatory, Ethical Question) except in this case you can certainly I.D. who did it. If he had made the error the other way I'm sure we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Matter of fact we may be reading about how some guy tried to get away with a lousy 12 bucks.

Just make sure the other student gets his credit, If you flew the extra time pay for it . . . it's only $12-$13 right?

You said free and flying in the same sentence. Stop lying.

Is this thing on?

No, I think most people hit ignore on you RiddlePilot. Too bad...

Heck, I would enjoy 12 minutes of free fly time, but to me that's the same as finding a $10 bill on the ground. Sure, it buys lunch, but I still feel bad for the poor sap who dropped it.

Sounds to me like he already did the right thing. It's the intsructor who should have corrected the problem and gave the other pilot a credit towards his next flight.

Even though he told the CFI, and the CFI did nothing about it he still should have fixed it himself. Like someone else mentioned, if he would have been charged for extra flight time that he did not use, we would not even be having the conversation. You can bet the student would have made sure the situation was corrected.

As for someone mentioning that if they found a $10 bill as being the same deal, I would guess you did not see who dropped it. So it is not the same. If you did see someone drop the $10 and then not say anything or give it back to them, then you are in the same boat.

Wouldn't doubt it. After all, ERAU is teh evil!

Wouldn't that make me.... Dr. Evil as a ERAU grad?

But since I have only a Bachelor's degree, perhaps Bachelor Evil or something...

. . . and starring RiddlePilot as Mini Me.

Poor poor ERAU...or something like that.

I guess what I was getting at with the $10 bill statement was no matter what, when you are spending someone elses money like that, it just plain sucks for them. Hence, I would do what is in my power to rectify the situation.
Seeing someone drop money and keeping it is a little cold blooded, and IMHO so is snatching up someone elses flight time. I would hate to be in the other guys shoes in that situation.

Pretty funny to me....just this past Sunday, I stopped at a gas station/store to buy a bottle of water. The guy in front of me looked down and there was a twenty dollar bill. He looked around and saw that the guy in front of him had dropped it. He told the cashier, "That gentleman in front of me dropped this on the floor". The response of the clerk? "Well, it's my floor" as he proceeded to put it in the register.

That's human nature for you!! Makes you want to do the right thing, doesn't it??
